I was just put on PIP, 30 days notice. I was late on exactly one task I was given. I always work overtime. Always take on more work. But I also voice my opinion freely and apparently my manager does not like that all that much.
Should I even attempt to do something about this or just quit on my own? Is there a situation in which somebody on PIP did not end up fired in the end?
There's no need to be harsh to someone going through tough time especially now, you won't get how cruel ibm is until they do it to you.

Not trying to take IBM's side, but you sound like a problem employee. Better to just cut bait and leave as they want you gone anyhow. Start over somewhere else with a fresh slate.
I know this is old, but I was just PIP'd, for sending an OOO notification 2 months prior to a customer when I'm in mandatory IBM reskill bootcamp from 9-6pm. I've challenge it simply in hopes of getting a severance package, and I had proactive ticket with IBM's Talk It Over and they actually sent HR a reason for a PIP reversal, I also opened 2 tickets with Concerns and Appeals, time to be a pain in the a–.
For God's sake, please do not spend your time and energy on trying to reverse the PIP hell... Instead focus on your next move. IBM has already decided to put you out of the door, there is no point in going through the struggle to reverse it. Of my 10 years of experience, I've not seen a single person surviving PIP.
Even if you make it past the PIP you will be blacklisted from being promoted in the future.
Making it past the PIP is worse for your career than anything.
The PIP is just a CYA move as they manage you out. Most likely it will have tasks that are in no way related to why you are actually being managed out, and many if not all of the tasks will be very difficult to complete in the time frame allotted. The grading will be based on how your manager "feels" you did and he/she will be sure to document every little thing you do wrong.
Bottom line, It is almost impossible to win once you have been tagged. They will block any moves to other teams, and actively undermine your ability to succeed within IBM. Your future is now up to you...
Walk. You can be fired during the PIP period with no severance and no benefits if the feel you are not adhering to the "spirit" of the PIP. Wipe your drive, clean up your email and accept the 30 days with 90 days benefits. Send them your laptop and phone and walk away.
Just find a normal company to work for. IBM wants recent college grads who don't know anything.
The company is doomed with that mindset and the clients will leave in mass numbers soon.
It's not good.
As a former (and recently retired) FLM, you are put on a PIP as the decision has been made to manage you out of the business. Spend your energy and efforts finding something different externally and move on. You will not win the fight and IBM has become border line unethical with this process.
22 years here, never saw any case where a person reversed a PIP
Devote all your time to finding a new job.
Any successful challengers to their PIP terms out there? things like no warning of PIP, no communication of what needed to improve, unmake-able PIP objectives, extremely short PIP time frame (30-40 days), no feedback on current achievement vs others in same job/role..?? appears IBM GTS is now using PIPs in place of a formal Resource Action. Maybe hoping they aren't challenged by individual employees?

Good luck finding any IBM managers that like having their employees voice their opinion freely. You can take a course in brown-nosing or else you will be another layoff statistic.
You should manage your own exit - do not expect to fight the monster. Armonk has power and you are just one drone unit in their eyes. Ginny wants to slash payroll wherever she can. She's got megabucks anyway. GET OUT and DO NOT expect your hard work EVER to be appreciated.
