Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Future of K-Mart (as I see it)

OK - After today's closure announcement in addition to the ones in process make it appear that the K-Mart store count will be in the low 500's by November and perhaps (if another quiet round of closings hit) below 500. And while the format itself showed a small profit in the last quarter (when you add in asset sales) the format as a going concern will likely cease in 2018. This is my prediction of what will happen:

1) The bulk of the remaining stores remain in three regions in the country:

-California (and to a lesser extent the neighboring states of Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington)

-East Coast (Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Mass)

&

-Industrial Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky)

If the chain survives in some future form I would look for these three regions to be where it is. Of course the closing announcements have hit some of these areas pretty hard. Any viable company owned or long term leases in these regions will be converted to cash until the remainder stores in these regions can be sold to another chain (Dollar Store format perhaps) or spun off into its own separate company. An IPO would bring it needed cash and allow for new life as the New Super KMart Dollar Concept.

-Perhaps the group of stores in Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina are big enough to be viable but that is iffy.

2- Stores in the rest of the country will be closed and liquidated. The distribution cost is too high when the stores are spread that thin, Eventually SHLD management will finally give up the stature that comes with being a "National Chain" and make the right decision. Some key stores that are isolated from other competition may get a new life under a new brand but that may be just a few. Other properties will be sold or reconfigured as soon as practical.

3- Look for SHLD to actively seek a buyer for Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands and Guam.

SHLD will never file bankruptcy. It appears as if the store closing sales work well and are buying them enough time.

I worked for Kmart and suggested to the board of directors years ago when Don Keeble was in charge of stores, a very smart man and knowledgeable, to the board to develop smaller stores on the model of Dollar General and call them Smart Stores!

Did they? NO>

kmart's days are OVER in 2019

I'm just trying to give out accurate information. I work elsewhere, not for Kmart anymore. Its just a pet peeve of mine when people talk out of their a-- and not from any real information, Especially when they are incorrect

1ivs- You need to read the financials. While it is true that, "Kmart division was almost EBITDA positive this quarter" you have to understand how SHC does their accounting. While most businesses include things like rent/lease expense, maintenance and other expenses in the EBITDA figure, SHC does not so while it may seem like the EBITDA was getting better, if they truly added the expenses to the EBITDA then the numbers would be horrific.

"Not true. Kmart is still represented in 49 states, Virgin Islands and guam. I love when people spew out "facts" when they have no clue what they are talking about. Just because a customer told you they have no Kmart where they live doesn't mean Kmart has left the state completely. FYI the only state Kmart has left is Alaska and that was during the 2002 bankruptcy. Get your facts straight."

Ok, Kmart corporate lackey. Hope you like looking for a new job next year.

I'm in Michigan, where Kmart originated. If they want to keep a presence here, they're doing it wrong. The closest Kmart to my house is 10 miles away, where there used to be at least 4 stores closer. The 2 that were near my work are gone. I'm on vacation in northern Michigan at the moment and the store in the town nearby is closing.

In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, I just don't see it

Kmart will be around 415 stores when the dead weight and impossible rent stores are all closed.

"Kmart division was almost EBITDA positive this quarter - it's being right-sized but not going away entirely."

It is so sad that people are still grasping at straws to think Kmart will make a comeback. It's like say "Hey!!! We s--- but we s--- a little less, right?!" I mean, I don't WANT to lose my job nor do I want my fellow friends and co-workers. But you can only hide your head in the sand; cover your ears and go "La la la, nothing wrong here!! La la la" until WHAM!! Your store is shutting down.

"I think Kmart will continue to exist but it would not surprise me if they left whole states/regions"

It already HAS left some states in the midwest. We have people come in all the time saying that they have no Kmarts left in their state.

@1sed Yes that is the truth. Nike chose to not sell to us anymore after we merged with Kmart. And if I remember correctly we used to buy Nike for at least 500 stores when we had around 860 Sears stores.

Before the merge with Kmart some Sears stores, ours included were actually selling some Nike merchandise (shoes, socks, etc.,), among other things you would sell in other department stores but, after the merger they cancelled all future shipments and clearanced the product we had left. No one wanted to be associated with us especially with the fact that their product would possibly be sold at Kmart stores.

I agree that SHC will sacrifice Kmart to secure a short lived future for Sears, the writing has been written on the wall for years, with several remodels and improvements in sears stores and Kmart using plastic buckets to catch the rain. Sad to see the Kmart format in its current condition, because with the right leadership and investment, it has a potential to be great. Either way both Brands are tarnished and eventually will be a historic note in the book of the many recent failed and closed companies.

The way I see it is that Sears will sacrifice all of Kmart to keep itself alive for awhile longer to keep their stock up. The property of the Kmarts are the only real value they have left, not the sales. This is why you see a lot more Kmarts close down than Sears.

I think Kmarts will all be gone soon. Sears stores will survive, I think, but on a much smaller scale and possibly a different format.

K-Mart has no future.

The world is changing, retail as we knew it is dead. Shouldn't that be obvious by now?
