Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

GE Power is in Major Trouble

It has been confirmed that GE Power is suffering from major design and/or quality flaws in their current H and possibly F Class Gas Turbine fleets. The combustion system is failing at multiple customer sites. Customers do not want the risk so they are selecting GE's competitors for their gas turbine purchases. This problem could not have come at a worse time for GE as they have already reported major cost and cash flow problems prior to this discovery. If you work for GE Power understand that top leaders are short timers and the elimination of your salary will increase their exit bonus. The first round of layoffs happened in March 2017. Phase 2 is unavoidable so be prepared, The US will be hit this year. Europe will be hit massively next year. Neither hourly or salaried is safe. You have been warned !!!!

How long will GE hide the current design/quality flaws of the Gas Turbines in Greenville from customers and investors? Come GE, I dare you to make it public.

GE Power is in more trouble now than when I originally posted this over 3 years ago. GE was in a death spiral during a robust economy and now the world economy has tanked due to the pandemic. We talk on this site about GE's bad leadership but GE Power did have MANY good leaders. Most of which are now gone. I would have never expected the mass exodus of the good ones. This loss of good leaders will create a vacuum for the bad ones. The bad GE leaders use intimidation to force employees into submission. The unnecessary stress the bad leaders have placed onto GE's people has already taking a serious toll on lives and health of many employees. Many GE employees are suffering from stress induced health problems. Many have passed away. GE should realize the cost of its intimidation leadership style. Working at GE is simply not worth it.

There are a few loyal employees in Greenville chasing after Power's emergency du hour like loyal terriers, but most of us are past that now. We're just laughing at them and waiting for the next axe to fall, hopefully on their foolish heads.

GE Greenville is floundering. The gas turbine plant leadership staff has no idea why their leadership is failing. The current leadership is made up of non technical managers that are lucky to find their way to the plant everyday. Time is up for these clowns. The elimination of their job should happen immediately as their ineffective leadership continues like a broken record.

Maybe GE can pay a new CEO $Millions to be more innovative. Try something new like layoffs, reorgs, and many new initiatives. Maybe throw in a few new buzz words to insure themselves bonus payouts. Visit a few plants to show the worker bees how they’ve been doing everything wrong.

GE’s Gas Turbine Problem goes global -Reuters

More GE Power problems. Utilities are shutting down 18 of GE’s newest gas turbines for repairs at power facilities from Taiwan to France.

GE is setting aside nearly $1/2 Billion Dollars of unexpected premature repair cost. The fear is nearly 130 produced gas turbines will require this design correction.

The 9HA, 7HA, and 9FB are all feared to be impacted.

GE is throwing smoke screens trying to diminish the negative impact on its reputation. The smoke screens will damage GE’s reputation even more.

Goodbye GE jobs.

GE Power is finished.

The fat lady is singing.

As a former GE employee I visited a Duke Energy Power Plant today. The engineer onsite told me they have decided to purchase Siemens gas turbines instead of GE because of all the GE gas turbine problems being reported in the field. I asked how customer service from GE was. He said he has never heard the words customer service and GE used in the same sentence. I will add though, he said all gas turbine manufacturers are horrible. He said it’s a matter of selecting the least arrogant and most reliable unit. At the moment, GE is the least reliable, the worst customer service, and simply not worth doing business with. He said he knows many GE employees and have never seen a more miserable group of people. And finally, he wishes all of the existing GE employees good luck. As do I. Good luck to you and I sincerely wish you the best. Bless your hearts!

GE Greenville employees are walking around like Zombies. We all know it’s just a matter of time before the paychecks stop being deposited into our accounts. The most scary thing is we may have to actually work if we get a new job. No more make believe life for us.

I am a vendor serving the GE Gas Turbine Plant in Greenville, SC. The biggest problem I see with GE is the undeserved arrogance of GE employees and managers. I add two significant fees when I quote anything to GE Greenville:

  1. Arrogance and aggravation fee. I usually get calls from 15 GE employees asking me the same questions. I add 3% for this because my time is money and GE is a culture of arrogance.

  2. Payment finance fee. I add 7% for GE’s ridiculous terms and conditions. GE wants their vendors to provide finance services via their terms and conditions. 7% is competitive for this. Most other vendors refuse to accept GE terms and conditions and will not sell to GE. Others charge more. Also, if GE chooses to pay within 15 days, GE will deduct up to 4%. I add the 7% in case GE chooses this option so I do not lose 4%. GE thinks they are saving money when in fact they are spending much more. It is all and mirrors.

8Fqra, sorry to hear you were fired from GE Power Systems. You must not have been included in the extensive buddy network. Most of the non-buddies have already been fired from GE. Very soon the buddies will have to select buddies to layoff. That is when things are going to get very interesting at GE. GE Greenville is ranked as one of the worst offenders when it comes to “buddies”. The buddy system is part of GE’s problem. Many good, hard working, dedicated employees have been sacrificed to save a “buddy”. I am actually looking forward to when the so called “buddies” have to start pounding pavement.

When I got fired from GE Power Systems about 12 years ago I told the HR id--t who was escorting me out the door that in 10 years they're going to do a study as to what went so wrong for GE Power and they're going to determine it was handing the leadership of the company to the Pratt & Whitney engineers that came out of West Palm Beach. Why would you hire a group of engineers that your company had just put out of business to come work for you? Did the question of sabotage not cross your mind? I was off a little on my predictions ( 2 years). Nevertheless my prediction was spot on. They drove the company into the grave. They are the worst decision makers. When I left I told my Section Chief "Any body who would pick this design over that one doesn't have the sense to piss in a pot." And you know what? None of those Pratt & Whitney engineers have enough sense to piss in a pot, and the GE management that hired them had even less sense than that.

If a power provider cannot provide power there are definite liabilities where GE is obviously at fault. Not being able to provide promised power to the grid will be much more expensive liabilities than producing junk blades.

GE Power remains in Major Trouble. 2019 is forecasted to be another down year as overall power products are in decline globally. Adding salt to the wound, GE has a reputation of producing flawed gas turbines in a market that it once dominated. GE has lean actioned the quality and reliability out of its products. GE’s bad reputation will prevent GE’s recovery. Layoffs will begin snowballing throughout GE’s Power Division unlike any layoffs GE has ever experienced. GE has always executed layoffs as standard business practice but the layoffs coming soon will be for basic survival.

The level of Sh-- going out the doors and gates in Schenectady could make some heads spin for sure!! Our culture now has those that "THINK" they know what right or wrong, making major assembly decisions, of which will turn out to be catastrophic in some cases once on site and running. Most all of these issues pointed out on the shop floor only to be talked down to or reprimanded by management that cant handle the truth! The COE and cell leaders haven't much of a clue on most areas, and the union decides that protecting sleepers and d--g addicts is more important than fighting for quality work and those that want to work for a living!! One way or another we are all going to be looking for jobs, sadly most likely because of piss poor decisions beyond the hourly control!!!

Combustion problems were not even close to the high cost of GE’s blade failures. MHI has reduced installed time and cost of Power Plants by $Millions while surpassing GE in quality and reliability. The Marc VIe is an ancient overpriced power plant control system that GE tries to use old sales tactics to lock customers into extremely costly contracts. GE’s customers and competitors are laughing at GE’s arrogance.

We are circling the drain together. What a perfect analogy. I have watched as many good coworkers have already taken the trip down the drain. Instead of keeping the experienced hard workers GE has chosen to keep the bean counters and cool aid guzzlers. This will only make things much worse for GE. I am telling you, GE has no idea how bad our conglomerate culture is.

To all my colleagues, I regret that we are all circling this drain together. If there was anything I could do to help this business escape the death spiral, I would have already done it. The fact is that there's nothing we can do. Laughter is the only thing we still have, as there's no morale left to crush.

How can they not be held accountable for the mess we are in? They made many $Millions allowing them to support their families well. We get escorted to the door.

The combustion problem mentioned a year ago has not been solved but is being “managed”. The oxidation problem has been known for a long time as well. Nobody wanted to tell leadership. Besides, leadership doesn’t understand anyway and would only complicate instead of “help”. Most of us avoid telling our leaders because we do not want the “help”. That is code word for “lack of help” and complicating an already known challenge.

GE has a policy to layoff young employees to offset the old ones with hopes of avoiding age discrimination law suits. It is all about optics? The buddy system is unbelievable in Greenville. Management in Greenville is still running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They have no clue why none of their dumb ideas work. None of the buzzwords and reorgs are working. With all the early retirement packages and layoffs, Greenville has been set back 20 years with loss of experience and expertise. Gas turbine quality has death spiraled to the lowest levels in decades because of the Crotonville pseudo intellectual managers that were produced and infiltrated leadership positions. Engineering and manufacturing is so incompetent Greenville needs to shut down before it is too late.

This post was an understatement of GE Powers problems. It will be a miracle if GE Power doesn’t bankrupt all of GE. None of the employees care anymore. We are all riding the clock hoping to survive. GE leadership has destroyed our morale while loading their pockets and their buddies pockets with cash. Other posters have posted about how the internal buddy system works in GE Power (especially Greenville). This could not be more accurate. If you are not in this unofficial group find another external job. Your time at GE WILL be limited until the next layoff. Of course, a few African Americans and females will be saved to avoid discrimination lawsuits.

But GE's announcement that the 2018 dividend would be cut came out in November, when the 3Q Earnings Report showed that operating profit at Power was down $636 million. Which is definitely a big number, but doesn't seem big enough to force a $4 Billion reduction to the dividend. The 45% yearly reduction was announced in the annual report this year, which also noted that in 2017 GE spent $6 Billion on acquisitions, $3 Billion on stock buybacks, and $8 Billion on the 2017 dividend, in addition to the $11 Billion adjustment for tax reform and insurance-related charges.

Seems like there are other major problems at GE other than just the downturn at Power.

General Electric's Power business gave Wall Street a bullish forecast for the year. But rather than rising, GE Power's profit fell 45%, forcing GE to slash its overall profit outlook and cut its dividend for only the second time since the Great Depression. ANCHOR's away!
