Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

OK geniuses. What would you do differently than BK?

Keep in mind that PCs are dinosaurs and the REASON for all of the layoffs is that people aren't buying these anymore.

Hi I am Jack Welch here is my advice, Get rid of BK, Aicha, Amir. Get the Gelsinger guy to run the ship. Make Murthy work beyond 5PM and on weekends too, dont let him get away by just posing smart and yelling his way up as an execution guy. Stacy is smart but needs to enroll and get an Engineering degree before he can take on the reigns. Diane can last until the server trick can sustain, but definitely not CEO material. And Intel go very deep in ranks to some FLMs you really get people who Are not political, who produce products and whistill have intel values with great credentials. They will propel intel in right direction.

The PC is a commodity and essentially dead as a cash cow with the margins Intel is used to. They need to find something (not drones or Mica bracelets or snowboard RealSense attachments or Basis watches or TAG Hauer watches or weird toothbrushes on reality TV shows) that everyday people think they need to have and need to refresh regularly. Steve Jobs was the genius that saved Apple there, in that regard. BK's factory mentality of control and command and copy exactly and cut won't make this transition. The only other large legacy tech companies I can think of that have survived/revived are GM and IBM, and they did it with enterprise services. The rest have gone the way of Digital Equipment Corporation and Kodak.

Not a single one of you had addressed the specific problem of the secular decline in PC sales.

It looks like you're all no better than BK.

@1nib

LOL. People don't want faster PCs.

People don't want faster horses - they want cars.

They don't want a better buggy whip.

Get it through your thick skulls that PCs are OVER.

Intel is truly lost with this mentality.

spin off all non chip making groups

fire 90% VP's since they failed, especially who acquired any company that failed (Renee Mcafee example)

bring back 8a-5p in office culture

Let managers make hiring and firing decisions versus using a math problem to decide.

Fire Murthy.

Bring back Skaugen or Gelsinger to run the company

Resign

If job functions / groups are eliminated replace H1B's with American citizens whose jobs were eliminated and have the same or similar job function.

Ok,BK: so the best thing that you can do, is to fire yourself! That's what you should do.

  1. Make PCs and laptops better

a. Produce a 2 core, 5 GHz, 8 MeB cache microprocessor. No stinkin' graphics. Keep the power under 140W. [Goal: sell something exciting]

b. solve the CPU vs. DRAM speed issue. Match main memory speed to the frequency of the processor. Stop with the electrical engineering hoo-haw; just fix it. Current DRAMs are optimized for density. Enough with the freaking density - optimize for speed. Now if "3D Cross Point" or "Optane(tm)" popped into your head, go jump off a cliff.

  1. Deeply cut the prices of server chips. S--- the profit out of the market before ARM and OpenPower s--- it out of Intel. Get ready for additional orders.

  2. For new product initiatives, put your best people on it. You'll know these people from the current microprocessor teams. Do not keep under-staffing new strategic projects. Double staff them. Get to the market on time with a great product.

  3. For the love of all that is good and holy, hire some managers who know how to do program and project management. They will have skills unlike anything you've seen before. Let them work with the lead engineers to figure out how best to get the work done. Note that this will not involve figuring out a web of approval forums for having every decision reviewed and ratified. The engineers will make those decisions.

  4. Create a manager training program. Don't discontinue it at the next recession.

  5. Ditch the focal process and whatever you're thinking of doing with the focal process. Read the book Work Rules by Laszlo Bock.

  6. As for the next killer product, Intel needs to develop oops need to put kids to bed, see you tomorrow.

Agreed. More layoffs are a virtual certainty.

Losing critical mass on engineering talent is the kiss of death.

I started writing this response so many times but attitude came out every time.

Intel is in deep trouble. It has lost its top talent, the superstar engineers do not want to work there anymore and its competition has become entrenched.

I believe their strategy is to milk the business as long as they can. To keep profits up, they will cut headcount.

If I owned any stock, this is the strategy I would want them to stick to as they have proven that they

Sometime you can not put humpty dumpty back together again.

The remaining employees hate working for this goon. He has shown his cards and made the situation much worse. He continues to make idiotic mistakes and the board says nothing. Company will continue its downward slide as employees are in fear of losing their employment.

1) Figure out what it is that Intel wants to do in mobile. For example, if TMG optimized the 14nm node for power and performance properly and developed memory, logic and other IP suitable for mobile - then Fab as a service will truly be viable and will also help amortize the node R rather grow businesses with good metrics (gross, net, well amortized R&D) and allow small experiments to come to fruition.

15) TI for example used this strategy with high power analog

16) ...

BK, so you come here to get ideas on how to run intel now?

Nice try! Even if ppl here give you a business plan, you'll BK the execution, because that's what you do.

It's near impossible for BK to un-ring the bell of burning all trust and credibility with the remaining employees after ACT and the 2015 layoffs.

No matter what the stated strategy, employees (MCM down) will behave in ways that will thwart successful execution. It's every man, woman (and everything in between) for themselves at this point. Not exactly the conditions needed for breakthroughs and teamwork.

It's very rare that comes up with more than 1 or 2 products that are over the top.

Example MS has bought acquired every product from Dos, to Sql server or copied like excel from visiting clack

Goggle other than search has bought ad words, andorid, nest utubr...etc

Large groups can not innovate, but they can scale and feed customer base.

Intel was too fat and happy to invest 50 mm into small companies and grow them to 1billon enertprise leveraging their market monoply.....good acq plus 25 teams of 2o member teams with a 10% sucess rate would go a long way

Smaller team close attention to markets. All missing

I would have outsourced moved 90% of company to Korea, China, India, Tiwan kept high end R&D innovation in USA Intel labs, Marketing in USA.....we also missed batteries cars

We don't have even 500 innovation engineers today in USA. Google, fb, Amzn seem to have smaller, better, more diversfied innovation teams.

Start by swinging the balance of power away from management and HR and back to engineers. Let the experts do what they do best and show them the support they need to make it happen. Then as others said, get rid of TWWW as all studies ever performed have shown that private offices make the best use of engineers. Conversely, TWWW cubes make the worst use of them - it's like working in the middle ring of a circus. Then don't do contra-revenue on an area that's mature, and especially don't pull out of that area after you finally gain ground.

As for PC's, I don't really believe that they're dead yet. Get on the phone with MS and tell them to pull their heads out. They haven't made a decent OS since Win7, and everybody's too afraid of Win10's (well proven) spying to upgrade. Devote the right resources to making CPU's faster. Since Sandy Bridge we've seen about a 10-15% increase in performance over 4 generations. When even gamers don't see a reason to upgrade you've got a major problem. So stop shooting yourself in the foot already and give a reason (and no, iGFX is NOT a reason on its own).

Finally, figure out the next trend and invest heavily in it. Note that this is NOT drones or BMX bikes. It might be autonomous cars, and 3dxpoint will open up other huge opportunities.

As a regular poster here of why things are so bad and why they are going to get much worse and not improve with BK's BKing, I have lots of thoughts, but since BK decided in his wisdom to kick me to the curb due to one below average stock grant in 20 years, I'm not sharing but will continue to share why the current direction is absolutely going to put Intel in position for more layoffs and contraction.

The situation historical situation I can pose to those that know

History Buffs: Intel is like the Germans during WWII after they lost the beach on D-Day

Business / Tech: Intel is like IBM's PC business after Compaq/Dell/Gateway and others invaded the business.

SImply said INTEL will contract, and there is a small chance they will survive beyond their 10nm node timeline but it is slim and new direction and leadership is a must, as the current one is BK'd
