Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Strange

I left in 2012, my husband retired in 2015 as well. We both spent (almost) entire careers with the company. I come here on layoffs dot come maybe twice a year to see how things are going, there is typically a post every month or so. Now I come and I see over 100 posts in less than a month, rare posts about layoffs but a ton of negativity and concerns. This is not OK and I hope all turns out good for everyone.

Delta is reportedly considering ordering 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
On the surface this might sound like the craziest idea ever, but there’s
potentially some merit to it.

Delta is leasing the 717s from Boeing’s leasing company, and Delta wants
to return these planes before the leases are up
Clearly Boeing is struggling with the 737 MAX; not only is the plane grounded,
but new demand for the plane has dried up, and we’ve even seen airlines cancel
their existing orders
The two companies could reach a deal whereby Boeing takes 717s back early,
and Delta places an order for 737 MAXs, keeping the production line going

How Strange is Boeing’s Lack of Management

https://www.fin24.com/Companies/Industrial/new-ceo-stands-by-737-max-eyeing-reset-at-troubled-boeing-20200123-2

Protecting the dividend

Calhoun responded to sometimes pointed questions from reporters
with greater ease and less defensiveness than the more technocratic
Muilenburg, who was savaged by lawmakers at congressional hearings
and lost the confidence of airlines and regulators with a series of too-rosy predictions about the MAX that damaged credibility.

But Calhoun dismissed a question on whether Boeing would suspend
OR Cut its dividend as a way to signal a shift in the company's orientation,
Saying the company has the financial capacity for the payoffs.

The policy will persist "unless something dramatic changes," he said.

November 14 2019 Memorandum:
https://theaircurrent.com/aviation-safety/faa-pushes-back-on-pressure-to-return-boeing-737-max-to-service/

FAA pushes back on pressure:

The FAA’s top official in an internal memorandum and a video to the agency
Pushed Back on what he described as pressure to return the Boeing 737 Max
to service.

“I know there is a lot of pressure to return this aircraft to service quickly”
According to a video from the FAA administrator Steve d—son distributed
To FAA employees and review by the Air Current “But I want you to know
That I want you to take the time you need and focus solely on safety.
I’ve got your back”

d—son’s message does not specify the origin of the pressure, but the creation
of the video and a November 14 memorandum to the safety chief Ali Bahrami
This was in direct response to the (Monday progress report from Boeing) that said
The company expected the FAA to approve the final Airworthiness Directive
That would clear the 737 Max by December, according to U.S officials.

“The FAA fully controls the approval process” wrote d—son to Bahrami.
Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While d—son’s message doesn’t necessarily throw Boeing’s guidance
In Question, it does underscore the rift between the plane maker and
It’s Chief regulator which is under intense scrutiny from its global peers.
(IMO)
It’s not that Boeing’s management is short sighted.
They just can see over that 600 billion dollar pile of cash that is the 737.
Or past their bonuses.

In 1909
Elmer A. Sperry built the first automatic pilot for aircraft using gyroscopes.

In 1916 the first artificial horizon in aircraft is used based on the gyroscope

For more than a century GA and passenger aircraft have work fine without
AOA sensors
Is AOA just another (As Seen On TV) gimmick? I think so.
Capitalism also need to have something new to sell, another pet rock.

Correction that's (AoA) System Not AoS System/Sensors {4 the record}

If Dennis ain’t the problem. @11NFUEwo-fee Please tell us who or what is.
Who would allow an AoA system to feed data to a Flight Control System
And not take into account a sensor failure given the history of AoA Systems.
Of all people, Dennis would know better, so who’s in charge an accountant?

It’s just a question, it’s nothing personnel, the whole world would like to know.
Are the McNerney of this world making the final engineering decisions? If so
Then the company (that allows an accountant to make engineering decisions)
AKA the board of directors needs to be held fully accountable for the 346 lives lost

As with most things there is enough "fault" to go around. Every failure had to happen to lead to where we are.

If one person or group did something differently, none of this happens.

It's natural to want to point fingers and assign blame, but once you pass the the age of 10, things are not simple anymore.

We need to evaluate, learn, and change. Will something like this happen again, unfortunately the answer is probably yes. It may be Beoing, it may be Airbus, it might be some other industry. Disasters happen. When things are going well, people get complacent.

Our job is to somehow overcome human nature and stay vigilant.

Something more Boeing is doing.
They reorganized safety,
They fired BCA head
They separated chairman and CEO jobs
They stopped stock buybacks
They stopped acquisitions that were not already in progress.
They HAVE NOT laid anyone off

And now, Mullinburg is fogoing ALL bonus compensation.

But I'm sure someone will still find something wrong with him.

BTW, he is an ENGINEER

Strange Indeed

After watching Congress question Dennis it was painfully obvious that
there was no one involved on either side with any competency.

85 percent of the American people already knew Congress is a sham.

But to see the head of what is arguably the last great aviation company
in this country, tell it like it is, yes we have no defense, no excuse.
Boeing built an indefensible fleet of aircraft and it was obvious to all at the top.
Profit and Share Holders First, yes we made mistakes
Boeing leadership did not make mistakes the engineering teams did. (BS)
Boeing leadership did not make mistakes
Boeing leadership unlawful took the lives of three hundred forty six people.
There’s a word for that.

McNerney’s decision to upgrade the 737 to MAX
Instead of developing a new model

Does that mean that Boeing operates under a cult of personality?
Rather than a Team of Marketing; led by development engineers
First find what the market needs are and how broad is
the support for the product, ie. what’s the unit production look like?

Wow this whole time I thought there was a reason we had a BoD

Thank you @11NFUEwo-fee

On June 30, 2005, The Boeing Company hired McNerney as the chairman, President and CEO. McNerney oversaw the strategic direction of the Chicago-based, $61.5 billion aerospace company with a focus on spending controls.[10] With more than 160,500 employees, Boeing is the largest manufacturer of commercial airliners and military aircraft, with capabilities in aircraft, rotorcraft, electronic and defense systems, missiles, satellites and advanced information and communications systems.

As Boeing's first CEO Without a Background In Aviation he took the decision to upgrade the 737 series to 737 MAX instead of developing a new model.[11]

Boeing’s CEO Says Its Culture Will Fix Its Problems
OMG
The astonishing amount of arrogance it must take to believe
That, in yourself or in your organizational culture,
You have access to all the answers.
This after what is now a very public development and roll out debacle.
The Max M—acres.
Boeing management has long seen themselves and their organization
As Omnipotent. They still don’t get it:
That’s why we need an independent FAA
That’s why we need more top line engineers in management positions.
That’s why we need a new board of directors.
At the highest levels Boeing Management cannot be trusted.

Shown as fully incompetent or completely ignorant
They will still profess their supremacy as world leaders in aviation.

The rest of the world now has doubts, thanks to their leadership.

Dennis ain’t the problem. This is a byproduct of the Jimmy McNerney era of slash and burn manufacturing. Juked the stock price for a few years and now Dennis is left with the bill.
