Interview question: Why do you want to leave EM?

When you are asked the reason you leave Exxon, what do you say?

HR does not exist. That group died ages ago. All we have now are a few depleted shadows of persons pretending that they exist.

Every interview I have had, it is understood. The industry knows how evil and toxic the company is.

HR stopped doing exit interviews when there became an obvious trend against certain EM policies that executives supported.

Stop taking in data in exit interviews then no data then no action required.

@ged+1, this isn’t true.

I joined another operator and most of the folks I met had met other Exxon folks who have left or still work at Exxon. They wonder how people put up with the ancient stacked ranking… and laugh at exxonians.

People do really well post leaving exxon. For money and mental health.

Don’t be su-ked in my exxons negativity that grass isn’t greener. Hold ur potential in ur own hands and pave the way. Don’t be scared.

@xfi+1uolw2wd Seems you lack basic reading comprehension skills. OP is not referring to an exit interview.

I was honest in my interview that I wanted a new challenge and that I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing. I also asked about the interviewee companies culture. I am sure with that they would have put two and two together. It is an open secret that Exxon culture is sh-t. It’s not a surprise in the oil and gas circuit.

Think about things have changed for the worst. Years ago before my old friends left we would go out to lunch and reminisce about the old days. There was always some sort of dysfunction ie back stabbers, piping in the old days but it was not as bad as now. When people left in the old days they would regret leaving and would say goodbye to the good people they worked with. Now employees quit with hours notice and disappear. There are no good friends or decent co workers left as everyone is trying to survive or move up. I am one of the last of the old ways and so obsoleted by the new ways. I cannot nor will not ki-l back stab or otherwise hurt my fellow employees. I am not useful to my supervisors plan to gather bad info on fellow employees. Notice that are not many friendly helpful employees left. Everyone is scared and frightened of getting piped and their ranking. Lots of brown nosing and a kissing to the bosses. I will leave immediately and not have existed. There is no one to say goodbye to as everyone is a bad person and new. There is no cohesiveness or working together as one team at exxon mobil. It is you against everyone else remember that. I am no threat the new ones and I try to help them. I constantly try to give them advice about design and engineering but I am ignored. I think they are too arrogant and want to figure it out for themselves or they think I will sabotage them with false advice.

"DW and his chronies sodomizing my entire world and all that is Holy" should be one of the reasons you can check during the exit interviews.

@xfi+1uolw2wd What does your comment have to do with an interviewer from a potential new job opportunity asking why you want to leave ExxonMobil?

OP ExxonMobil doesn't give a fvck about the reason why you're leaving. Darren wants you out. Period. So stop daydreaming. Most of the time, almost always, when you resign you don't get an exit interview. You just turn in your laptop, your keys, and your badge to your supervisor and leave the site. If you are luck one or two of your coworkers will say we'll miss you. That's it. This is ExxonMobil. You're treated like shlt here.

@OP; I told them the reason I left was because the trendline over the past 10+ years clearly shows that the ratio of UUGly to Purdy ones here is very imbalanced. We consistently PIP the Purdy ones and retain the mean UUgly ones with really bad attitudes.

BTW, my new employer only hires and retains the smart Purdy ones like me, to boost the overall morale of their workers.

PS. The HR person took a dump in her pants from laughing too hard upon hearing my response for wanting to leave EM!

If your circumstances are such that you can’t just go vague & generic (eg long tenure), you can point to the fact that the Company has been letting people go as part of cost cutting ( i e structural efficiencies) and add/customize from there.

The common reasons that everyone who works at exxon knows. Favoritism, unfair ranking, back stabbing co workers, terrible bureaucracy, failure to thrive, failure to compete with peers and unfriendly co workers dysfunctional workplace. HR and the management do not care as this is their plan to reduce the workforce. I will leave either at RE or if I can stand it 3 years after RE. The money is not enough for me to stay much longer. Mental health and freedom from constant criticism and unfair treatment is priceless.

Let me clarify: when you have a new job interview the first thing the hiring manager will ask why do you want to join us? Why do you want to leave Exxon and you obviously cannot talk about the culture!

“Interview question: Why do you want to leave EM?”

Most of them won’t depart by choice. Figuratively speaking, many of them have to be pried off of their desks and dragged out the door kicking and screaming. Turns out there’s not a lot of jobs where you’ll get paid into the mid six-figure range to doze off on Zoom calls and bounce reheated tech specs around.

You mean when interviewing for a new job? I say that I'm looking for a new challenge. If you say anything about what a toxic sh-t show the company is, they won't believe you and will just think you're a negative person. No one would believe the dumpster fire we work in or how inhibited we are from putting out the dumpster fire.
