Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Top 10 Things Every Qualcomm Employee Should Do Now

  1. Don’t be paralyzed by anxiety and fear that your name might be on the layoff list. There is nothing you can do about – it is completely outside of your control. Remember, your boss is probably as paranoid as you are.
  1. Take charge and own your career from now on. No one owes you anything and it’s up to you to figure out how to market yourself to land the next opportunity.
  1. Start working on your resume and LinkedIn profile TODAY. Reach out into your network and ask for help. Don’t delay as there will be many more people on the market later in the year competing against you.
  1. Be prepared that it may take time to land the next gig. It’s very tough on the job market and if you choose to wait until October then you’d would be running against the holiday season when hiring slows down to a crawl.
  1. Cut unnecessary expenses and focus on budling financial cushion to last at least 6 months while you still have regular income coming in.
  2. Don’t dwell too much on your age. Ageism exists but it’s not a deciding factor for many hiring managers if you are good at selling yourself and can demonstrate tangible achievements.
  1. Learn how to answer the ‘what is your salary expectation’ question.
  1. Practice interview skills – after a while we all get rusty, and it takes time to get back into the swing of things.
  1. Apply for the jobs that may not be your top choice. Go through interviews so you may practice. The more interviews you go through the better prepared you will be to ace interviews for your dream job.
  1. There is life after Qualcomm. 95% of companies in San Diego have less than 100 employees. Something to think about….

I agree with pretty much everything on that list. In my previous company (before Qualcomm) I knew that a layoff would affect me eventually, so I did a fair amount of research into other companies as well as other general preparation, like studying for interview questions. I found that this greatly reduced my stress while still at the company, as well as after the layoff when it eventually was my turn. The one thing on the list I might partially disagree with is "ageism ... is not a deciding factor ...". My take on that is the later you are in your career, the higher your salary is - this could influence a hiring manager, who might prefer to go with someone with a lower salary history. In the back of their mind, they will be thinking, "younger might have less experience, but they will learn quickly, in addition to being cheaper". Same argument goes for offshoring labor.

If you're not on the layoff list today then you will be tomorrow. Apple is making their own modem chips and who know what else.
Forget about working, and start training yourself. Do all the online courses that Qualcomm offers. Build your skills. And put as many keywords on your resume for the AI tool to pick up so you can get an interview. Else, you'll have a tough time finding a job. Don't be lazy. Don't give up. Don't get depressed. Don't eat too much and get unhealthy, Exercise and keep your mind active. While you're looking for a job, do some online courses on AI and Machine Learning. It will only help. Keep in touch with your ex-colleagues. They are your best source to finding another job. Add them onto your LinkedIn even if you didn't get along with them or never spoke to them. Everyone helps each other, cause you're all in the same boat. If you get a job, try and convince the new company to form a group or team and see if you can bring your coworkers into the same company. Help each other. Good Luck!
