Thread regarding Amazon.com layoffs

Trying not to panic

I am very worried because I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a better job for a long time. It will be even more difficult to get it if I become jobless.

On the other hand, although it is always a bad time to be laid off, in any case it is better to be laid off before than after holidays and holiday spending.

Although I'm trying not to panic, I am more anxious than ever...

Most large companies have hiring freezes, but some smaller ones are still hiring.

I just got contacted by a recruiter for a Team Lead position. His company is in the computer security space, and fortunately got their most recent funding in December '21, before the VC market froze.

This economy is beginning to look like a game of musical chairs: you must find a safe seat before the music stops. But there are still jobs out there.

Start looking again - hope you have your resume up to date and learn some new skills while you still have a job.

Agreed whole-heartedly that most hiring managers do not care about layoffs. However, at this point of time, it is pointless to even search for a role in any tech company. IMO, there is not one company that is actively hiring unless the position calls for very very very specialized skillsets (think PhD-level). Even those that are not actively laying off, are not really actively hiring.

Do not believe alllll the open reqs on websites - most are likely for Greencard sponsorships of pre-hired candidates and are likely sham openings meant to satisfy Labor Department rules.

Even so, Bezos gives Dolly Parton 100 million dollars while laying off thousands?

Hi fellow Amazonian. I don't know your situation or what team you're on but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Layoffs are focused on areas of high investment and low profitability. Unless your work falls into that category, you likely won't be affected.
  • The layoffs are well-publicized, and even if you're cut, you'll still have your resume, making it that much easier to land on your feet.
  • Hiring managers understand that layoffs happen and often have nothing to do with performance. It shouldn't affect your future employability.

Take a deep breath. Everything will likely be okay in the end. You've got this.
