In the June lay off of 166 IT employees. 85% we're over 40, 52% over 50 and 18% over 60.
If you’ve got over 30 years and don’t have your ducks in a row...shame on you. This company pays well. If you’re still working after 30 years with this company into your sixties, you should’ve taken a money management course when you were younger. Buying scratch off lottery tickets is not a plan for retirement!
“Most employees who are older want to go...how is this discrimination?”
Assumption on you part. Wrong! Show the data that leads to your conclusion that most want to leave.
Truth is the work force is aging because more people have to work longer due to the economy, and middle class spendable $$$ shrinking in purchase power.
ancillary information...OSHA released a report a Couple of years ago that deaths on the job were starting to rise. First assumption was companies endangering works. Nope, older people having to work we’re dying of natural causes. Unintended consequence!

What a great and accurate article!
“It sends a message that their employees are not valued or safe.” - I got this message and decided to be volunteer.
Good article
The last two sentences in article sums it up.
Still a good article, puts what Verizon is doing in a negative light,
The article has a catchy title and discusses the difficulties of older workers finding new jobs but it doesn't really get to the meat of what the title would suggest.
Read the Forbes article about Verizon targeting older workers which came out today.
You don't have to discriminate against age per se, there's plenty of perfectly valid reasons you can discriminate against someone. "Where do you see yourself in 10 years." Not moving up in the company? Lacks ambition and staying power.
