Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

The meaning of great performance

This place made employee's effort to achieve a great performance totally pointless. This is very evident in the recent layoffs. Does it even make sense to try to have a good performance anymore?

If you trend towards 2 or even get 2, or don’t get 4 in a couple of years, consider going to a different place.
It is extremely difficult to recover if possible at all. You will not be given good projects, and with the effort needed to recover at Micron you are more likely to succeed elsewhere.
Or at least have a normal professional life without a constant struggle.

With the "fit to a curve" preformance system you are best suited to find a group where you have more experience than most. Being in a group with a lot of GJS codes of 4 or above makes it hard to earn a 3 rating if you also have that GJS code.

One year the boss describes a 5 rating as someone who is ready to be promoted, the next year that is how they describe a 4. It just ends up being a situation where the manager is forced to rotate who gets the 4 ratings as a means of appeasing the strong workers.

Reality at Micron is such that the individual performance is dependent on many factors, the fab performance, the quality of the material processing before and after you, other’s support etc.
At the end of the day it is the management discretion who gets resources and shines and who is going down. Saying that you didn’t have resources meets: “you have not asked/justified correctly.”

Once you find yourself on the underperforming side, just find some other opportunity and leave. Do not rely on promises of the future promotion, next year, etc.
It is the management’s job to make people work for the future perspectives.

Think what you have here and now. They have all resources to make you feel good and valued. If they don’t do it, look for the external opportunities, there is nothing wrong with that. It is all at will.
