Thread regarding Southwestern Energy Co. layoffs

Yes, this is about age

Come on folks! Age has nothing to do with it. If you’re particularly good at your job (and performing reach arounds), then your chances of being retained are exponentially greater.

That is so untrue I am not sure where to start. No matter how good you are, there is zero guarantee you will remain at your job. Those making the decisions have no idea about who you are and what you do. they deal with numbers. And if numbers say you earn twice, three times, or four times as much as somebody new would make in a similar position, you are gone. unfortunately, we live in a time where honestly earned pay through years with the company is a liability to keeping your job.

Folks, once you have your palms greased then “Reposition To Win” says Silly Billy. This Silly Billy is one clever guy cause he can’t say “Reach Around To Win” in his slicked up quarterly reports. Man, he is a smart guy and guess you get a ring for being that intelligent. After all look at his performance:

Silly Billy’s tenure:

SWN down 70.4% since he was named CEO

SWN down 88.7% since he joined as COO

$17.5MM in pay in last 3 years

“Politics will come into play”. Bingo. This means get your palms greased up, folks!!

Don’t care what you post. The consultant made an honest mistake not to pick up report. I snapped a few pics. Went and told them to get their report.

No list lying around anymore than someone leaving a credit card. I don’t work there, but that would be too easy. Computerized scenarios will be run and presented to Mgrs/VP’s, then politics will come in play. Best of luck to all!

B.S. that list laying around for all to see. Definite layoffs.

Hey folks, whoever posted earlier calling B.S. is the town fool or better yet the V+ fool. Would bet their name is on the list. Got to raise the IQ level at my company by getting rid of this fool. It’s not “if” but “when”.

Whoever summed up the consultant’s work as an ELT reach around is a person of insight and wisdom. Thanks for saying what we are all thinking here in PA, WV, AR and TX.

Whoever called BS is spot on. There are no layoffs happening. They just needed to hire a consultant to tell the ELT’s they’re doing a great job! In other words, a consultant reach around.

5ewq, here. I actually spilled all my coffee on it when I saw what was on the first page. Several scenarios, ranging from grim to very grim and grimmer than Devon. Since I spilled my coffee, I grabbed a free soda. So glad we still have those.

@5ewq I hope you didn't pick those up. They have cameras everywhere on campus.

Someone may want to tell the layoff consultants to not leave their printouts at the coffee bar. Wow. I guess it’s probably better to slowly remove all personal effects rather than pack boxes the day it happens.

The organizational and structural changes were promised to investors in February so they'll be coming soon. Consultants will be done this month. I'd estimate mid May layoffs somewhere between 10 and 40% (another fifty percent cut seems too high since that would just leave 300 in the Houston office). Just a guess.

All good stuff — but any updates on the consultants ? At some point the “guys” are going to have to do something - layoffs ...

... I have heard there is very little interest in Fayetteville much above a $1.3 billon , would be tough for swn to part with at that price

Yep. That joker on six likes to polish... that ring.... I insure you that is the case.

What about O-reach around-U? If you’re an O-reach around-U recruit, you can’t go wrong.

The only way to be safe around the office is if you wear an Aggie ring like the joker on 6 does when doing reach arounds while on 5. If you didn’t come from the “promised land,” your job is in jeopardy.

Basically, it’s about CYA. The young employees must get their masters degree. No guarantees, but they will be able to circumvent the office politics. Savings is the foremost aspect, especially as one approaches 50 years in age. If you don’t believe me, ask your parents.

Why would they not replace someone making three times more with someone that can do the job at a comparable level? They’re going to make a business decision just like you would if you went to another company.

We, are like the entire industry since 2008, are going thru change, layoffs, focus on cash flow, unstable prices, expensive and often uneconomic drilling shale wells. The oil and gas business is now like a factory. The stock market and analysts focus on the bottom line.

Agreed, but if it's a mass layoff again it'll be distributed across experience ranges to avoid issues. The consultants will have been there for their ten total weeks in another two weeks, so I'd expect the timing to be sometime next month.
