Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

Hyvee cutbacks

Yesterday was a hard day for HyVee employees.
84 store directors were either "stepped down", with a 20% pay cut, or allowed to retire.
The stores affected will apparently be managed by other, nearby store directors.
In addition there appear to be other big changes looming, with many department manager positions being eliminated, and the management of those departments being tasked to other, existing store employees.
This once proud iconic symbol of mid-western hard work and high values is about to become another victim of "progress".
I, for one am saddened to see this happening.

I was one of the loyal 30+ year employees that was told I no longer had my job and I would be part time. Of course without benefits. I quit and filed for unemployment. I won my case and everyone else that happens to should do the same thing. Make these gluttons pay for what they have taken from us due to no fault of our own.

We now are more concerned with hobnobbing with celebrities than we are with taking care of the employees that made this company what it WAS. So many things are wrong now and cutting long time employees is not going to fix it. Starting at the top is where we need to go to fix this. Over30 years of being a dept. manager and now I’m a stock crew person. Pay cut and still not sure when the other shoe will fall and I’ll be out all together.

Wash your damn hands folks. The real reason HyVee stop laying off was because they figure the corona virus will take some out enough today is they won’t need to lay-off.

I love how the corporate employees that work for HyVee think that this terrible decision and making such a huge impact in HyVee employees families lives and livelihood is going to save their company until the next f– up like The Market Grill or home shopping Warehouse or the stupid bubbles or Joe Fresh need I go on seems to me the problems are in corporate seems to me they should all give up their jobs

I love to read some of these comments from the customer's perspective it truly shows that some of the customers that shop at Hyvee do not care about the employees and their families and their livelihood it just goes to show you what kind of people we Thrive to give the best service to in a retail industry thank you to all the customers who support all of the employees that used to work for HyVee and that still do but now is the time to support them and stop shopping HyVee that won't happen though because 95% of the people that shop at Hy-Vee have horrible horrible morals.

Hy-Vee was a special company because the corporate office supported the stores. Now the corporate office runs the stores. I notice that it looks like even pricing is being governed in WDM. It does not look like store management has creative autonomy any longer. Sure they can blame changing habits, on-line, competition etc... But the fact is many traditional stores are still doing extremely well. Hy-Vee made a lot of bad decisions in last 20 years. They started making people sell their stock sooner. They started hacking away at manager commissions, the lifeblood incentive for hardworking talent was removed and a lot of talented people left Hy-Vee. The centralization of too many fresh departments.. stopping in-store preparation. Di-Lusso sandwiches are gross. The fried chicken is gross. Ground beef in plastic tubes. I cannot believe that the C-Suite at Hy-Vee has not been flushed... The reason is because their board is full of just them. They need to get back to 40K square foot stores with real fresh departments and service. Hy-Vee will never be Wal-Mart... so stop trying.

Store AND corporate management run and have 1996 mindset. They spent themselves into this layoff mess. Some great people hurt. Just terrible.

Fulfilment centers closing are telling. There are undercurrent s of financial issues going on at HYVEE. Imagine the losses they are taking....wow

The number one reason they don’t want transparency right now is they are afraid to announce they are cash poor and banks have shut off the credit line. Those top leaders of this company know if they announce this they will lose so many employees. They also know if stockholders catch wind of bankruptcy they will sell of all of their company stock. That will for sure cause the company to fail completely. The other side to this is they don’t want the competition to found out we are struggling. If they found out HyVee is on the ropes they try their best to end HyVee. We are now walking a fine line. This is why why don’t have transparency. HyVee has made it to a cross road. Their next step may end this company. Tread lightly Randy. FYI Top HyVee leader have been forced to sign a non-disclosure agreement. They want to keep the bankruptcy a secret.

I am begging for support from my fellow workers and the community but I completely agree with the post below about transparency! I asked my own “co managers” for transparency and they looked at me with sad eyes. Like they have no answers for me. I don’t think anyone outside the office has answers and we REALLY need them right now. Do SOMETHING to calm these waters, please!

You want us to keep pushing for HyVee as they keep taking out our family member. They treat us like they don’t even know who we are. They are also treating us as we are the problem. I understand that sometimes companies have to look at way to make their work force lean to become a better company. A little transparency would calm down a lot of employees. We have question about the future too. 1 why are we laying off employees? 2 why did you change directors to store manager? 3 why open fulfillment center then close them so fast. 4 when will the layoffs stop? 5 what is the next six month going to look like for HyVee? 6 Are we doing these changes to avoid bankruptcy? Randy you need to be honest with the employees. Don’t treat us like we are dumb and that we are going to keep taking this c-ap. The job market is plush with jobs right now. We have 80,000 employees that can find jobs somewhere else. Please Randy take the time and do a live video chat with the whole company. If you give us a reason and why we need these changes maybe we will fight even harder for you. Please inspire us to fight for the same cause! Randy you don’t answer to us I get it. Your the CEO of the company. We answer to you but you won’t have a company without the 84,000 strong employees. I think we have the best grocery store employees in the nation. Randy please start taking some advice from your staff and directors on the front line. Randy you have ran this company as if everyone answer too you but you have just found out you do have a boss. The banks own you and have finally put an end your cash flow. They have finally clipped your wings. Transparency's please!

In light of recent happenings in my company I implore you: Please remember your friends and family (blood related or not) that still come to work here every day with a smile, even if we don’t feel like it. Before you boycott Hy-Vee or stop shopping at your local store because of some painful decisions the corporate leaders have made, remember that we literally rely on your shopping trips here. Leading the charge for a protest, or vying to never shop these aisles again will only continue to hurt the remaining helpful smiles. Don’t jump to conclusions and assume I was one of the unaffected. I was also affected by the changes made in the last week. I have several friends that no longer stand in the ranks with me. I have cried many tears and still carry fear. But I’m begging you, please don’t abandon us now. We still need you. We have all swallowed hard pills recently. Many feel as though they have been punished for their twenty or thirty years of service. Angry, afraid, frustrated are all things we are experiencing. Please support us through this time. We need you. I am looking to my leaders in this company to help coach us all through these changes. I will continue to work just as hard as I ever because I still believe in us. Please Hy-Vee family, press on through this storm. Being negative is the easy path. If anyone out there is reading this and still cares for THE EMPLOYEES please don’t stop shopping. We are suffering and hurting. Don’t hurt us more with a boycott.

Time to update resumes for the job hunt. Let see how well HyVee does with out great employees who built this company for the last 30 years. Don’t wait until HyVee gives you a pay cut or fires you. The job market is great right now. I’m sure fareway, Wally, target price chopper and dollars general would love to hire you because of the experience you all have. If thinking about a career change now is the time to find one. Leave on your own terms not Hyvee’s.

This week was one of the saddest weeks for a company that I love, but I don't know who they are anymore I was asked to take a very large pay cut. I was with Hy-Vee when we had less than a hundred stores. I've talked to other managers and other friends we are split down the middle .some of us can't do it because of principle or because of pride. some of us can't do it because of family who would makes us have to do these things. a company that said helpful smile in every aisle . a company who's preaches about employee owned. I'm one of those people who have to walk away ,cuz it hurts too much. I've been with Hy-Vee off and on for over 30 years thank God this is not the only thing I can do. God bless all the families that have been affected.God will lead us and guide us.

Anyone wonder how the corporate stooges run the company into the ground with a 14% tax reduction in corporate taxes?? I'll bet they gave themselves fat bonuses at the end of the year. Then to bail themselves out, decide on "trimming the fat" at the stores where the hard working employees took care of the goose laying the golden eggs. I could walk through the bureaucratic hallways in Des Moines and trim the fat at the source. Managed like government. Poorly.

I worked for hyvee for 8 years in Osceola and was laid off due to remodel of the store and they depleted my position of customer service management. So teenagers could run the front end. I’m still struggling to catch up, financially have 2 cars in repo status, was homeless for quite sometime. And if I wanted to continue to work for them I had to take a job that was over 80 miles round trip. Had to cancel my insurance just so I could make it for fuel. Had to catch out my 401 K just to catch up on my expensives. It’s been terriblely hard to make it work. It put me in a deep depression because am such a hard worker. Never missed a day of work always on time. Dedicated employee. And corporate just didn’t care. It’s sad that family after family is having to lose homes, cars, even their dignity for Hyvee, Randy E. Needs to get checked out to see if he is even human, because so far seems like he doesn’t have a HEART!

Your manager doesn’t know anything. This whole thing seems to be a fluid situation that is changing daily. The issue is still the fact that there seems to be no end in sight and no one is being honest about why all this is happening. While it seems pretty apparent as to why, they aren’t coming out and saying it... just try to brush it off as ‘gettin the with the times.’ They need to tell us two things if they want everyone to stopped speculating and freaking out... tell us the truth as to why and tell us when this is ‘change’ is going to end.

Just heard more rumors about upcoming changes. Lomar rep are getting cut. Supervisor roles are either getting cut out completely or some laid off. HR manager in stores will be gone. Will just have a market hr rep for areas. All employees will only be allowed to be able to work 40 hours. No more over time. Can anyone confirm these rumors?

A former co-worker just got a survey in the mail from Quantum Workplace. It states:
WE'RE ON A MISSION TO MAKE HY-VEE THE BEST PLACE TO WORK IN AMERICA - AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Apparently they are looking for some more positive work experiences, soliciting those that have been away from Hy-Vee for several years.

Omaha was told at 8am Today that they will be closing by May 6th. They mentioned about helping us find jobs back at the stores. (I about laughed because I was told to go to the warehouse for FT hours and full benefits or stay PT, even tough I left my FT job elsewhere for Hy Vee) The stores have until the 24th of this month to provide positions for us or corporate will have to find jobs outside of Hy Vee for us. Then we are done by May. It’s really disappointing due to that they just hired a bunch of people recently and give out all these promises and now they’re taking those promises back. So stressful and heartbreaking. I’ve worked for this company for almost 10 years and noticed the difference from employee owned to complete corporate BS. But never thought they would get rid of a $5 million project and get throw it away. Must be nice to have money like that....

The original poster to this message thread, "old guy," was honest and factual. It is helpful to all if everyone adheres to the same factual standards. It is ok to be angry and upset, but don't say things for which you cannot prove, maybe note that it is simply your opinion. My opinion is that HyVee did not handle this well. The Burn The Ships motto that many layed off employees faced in a director's office was demeaning. Full time employees lost their benefits immediately with no severance to offer any cushion. For those with disabilities, the lack of notice was life changing. I would be curious to see how many employees in all states have lost their jobs and benefits. It is a fact that Hyvee offered full time employees a part time job with no benefits and no guarantee of hours. Most of those jobs were $10/hour. It is a scary time for both those layed off and those who remain. Be kind to each other.

Sounds to me like Hy-Vee is making the moves it needs to. Too bad there are so many fear mongers chirping on the sidelines. Still the best grocer in the Midwest, hands down. They'll come out on the other side in good shape. Watch.

Hy-Vee is on life support because Randy E. put it there. Poor poor choices. Market Grille, Fresh Cuts (what a joke), Fullfillment Centers, Mark Wahlberg, and more. Market Grilles bleeding money, Fresh Cuts that are anything but the fresh fruits that were cut daily in-store and higher priced, Mark Wahlberg product that sits on the shelf until it is expired and forced onto the stores (most likely due to contracts with MW). Same thing happened with Curtis Stone.

Does Randy strikes you as a guy that wants close fulfillment centers, storeS, pay cuts, and layoffs. That’s embarrassing for him to do all of these things. It’s like us buying a huge home and expensive cars and not being able to afford the payments. We either file bankruptcy or we sale our home and car to avoid bankruptcy. That would be embarrassing for us. Do you thing Randy is doing these changes because he want to. Right now HyVee is on life support. We are try to stop the bleeding and restore the breathing.

The speculation and perpetration of rumors on this site - especially from people who identify themselves as long-term employees and even store directors! - is appalling.

If you don’t know the facts, you truly don’t know enough to be commenting in the first place.

As a Hy-Vee employee I can tell you that the bankruptcy rumors are untrue. To the people spreading that rumor, stop scaring Hy-Vee employees.
