Elon Musk says the ‘laptop class’ needs to ‘get off their moral high horse’ when it comes to remote work

Seeing more and more buzz in the business community to end 'work from home'. The new angle: It's immoral and not fair to the service sector.

It's inevitable that GM will one day in 2023 demand "all hands on deck", an end to WFH and if sales dip low enough, free overtime from salary employees. Whatever leverage office workers once had in 2020-2022 is obviously GONE. Complain and they will put a little note on your talent card.

What will really push GM into action will be when several more companies make RTO mandatory and announce it to satiate the shareholders. At the end of the day, they will fire thousands and make great sacrifices if it means the shareholders are pleased, even on a short-term basis. Now is a good time to line up babysitters, install timers on your garden sprinkler systems, and power through those Netflix programs.

"managers can actually see if the work was done"

We can try to rationalize the situation but the fact remains. American corporations are calling people back into the office. GM isn't replacing thousands of workers who left voluntarily. They are absolutely going to see the urgency in meeting deadlines by doubling your workload and micromanaging the he-l out of you while maintaining real-life eye contact.
I think we will know it's coming soon when they send us a "work appropriately" poll.
We'll be back in our miserable desks between the end of shutdown and Christmas. It's inevitable at this point. Hopefully I'm wrong and you can later say, "I told you so." But we all know that will not happen.

The only way managers can validate that the work is being done is if you are back at your desk.

Or managers can actually see if the work was done instead of just seeing if there are butts in seats and pretending that's the same thing.

Of course, the former requires a little effort on the part of managers, so you can see why they'd rather just look around the room every now and then and call it good.

I'm looking forward to spending much more time collaborating with my coworkers. Those little conversations in the hall between meetings are so Fall 2023.

Sometime before this Fall, you will all be told to report to the office for 5 8-hour days a week. 13,000 took the VSP and their critical work is now going to be redistributed. The only way managers can validate that the work is being done is if you are back at your desk. You can water your garden and watch Netflix when you get home from work.

"Karen" is a derogatory racist term offensive to middle-aged white women.
Please refrain from using it.

SLT's RTO plans won't be affected one way or the other by what we post here.

Who cares what the office Karens gossip about.

As long as the work gets done, that's what matters.

By attacking/discrediting Musk, we somehow fool ourselves into forgetting that GM is very likely to force us back into the office full time. Nice work folks! Back to your gardens!

PS The co-workers who actually show up know very well who hasn't been seen. People talk too. Enjoy your day.

Musk's dad owned an emerald mine and his mom was a supermodel, so he didn't start from nothing.

He's not a genius (see what he did with Twitter) but he learned how to game the system to use other people's money. Mostly the taxpayers.

But because he's rich, people actually listen to his nonsense.

I downvote anyone that contradicts my reality. I’m going to enjoying working from home, yearly bonuses, and job security forever. You guys worry too much. GM is making record profits. Upward and onward.

I would expect all companies to return to their location-workplace practices that were in place prior to COVID. In my case, I was in the office almost always, but, occasionally, there was day that I asked to work at home, "to catch up on paperwork." Typically, No meetings were on my schedule, thus my absence from the office went unnoticed.

I will say this... When I worked from home, efficiency, I worked more hours, as I exchanged my commute hours, in order to get caught up.

Sadly, college grads of the recent 2-3 years were hired during "work-from-home," now facing the true costs we all have handled over the years- daycare, gas, time, etc,

“ He's just a welfare queen by another name.”
Reductive and off topic.
He is right about the workforce though. Too much funny business, not enough value for the corporations.
GM will end WFH by the end of the year.
Change my mind.

Every one of Musk's businesses was built on federal contracts, federal technical help, and billions of dollars of taxpayer money.

NASA launch contracts and technical transfers from NASA engineers for SpaceX, clean energy incentives and tax credits for Tesla, etc.

He's not a self made man who pulled himself up by his bootstraps. He's just a welfare queen by another name.

Remote work is a double edged sword for the American office worker.
Sight unseen, you are just as viable - and replaceable - as Raj with his Indian paper mill degrees. Raj has no creativity, makes lots of excuses, says 'yes' to everything regardless of reality, and never meets a deadline but he's less than 1/4 the cost as Dave and Mary from Warren. That's all management really cares about in the end. When you assume you have leverage or "Raj" will never deliver, you underestimate the greed and crass nature of the bean counters who love efficiency and are awarded with bonuses. In fact, big rounds of bonuses and stock packages for all of management when they execute mass job cuts while maintaining the work flow.
Cars from Korea and China have magically appeared in dealerships with Chevy logos before and they will again. Management laughs.

It's quite a bit unfair that Mr. high horse himself earns 10,000x the average salary, if keeping all things in perspective, and talking about what's fair and what's not fair. Sure I understand he earned his wealth, along side the hidden hand of high powered people behind the scene making his name. Make no mistake, Elon is no ones friend. He's not Soros bad, he's not painted in that light, but, he is no ones friend either. He's a face to appeal to the masses, nothing more.

As far as work from home, corporations have blown their loads and played their hand, and will find themselves wanting. For three years, the world has discovered that the work from home model works, with more efficiency. Pull us in, and we'll sabotage results hidden and behind the scene. Try and replace us, and well, good luck. There's just not enough normal people with pulses, still alive to do the work today, especially if you have a skilled talent like engineering and design. I've already mentioned this to upper management in our large company, and while I can't say this had ANY bearing what so ever, magically they stopped pushing us to come in regularly. I'm sure it was a coincidence. Much truth can be spoken, when it's never pinpointed back to the individual speaking the truth. Anon, VPN, etc, etc.

Good effing luck. These corporations are going to need it. Quiet quitting is real, and bring the people back, and it's your financials on the line. Especially, when there are no pulses available to replace, and fence hopper Juan, isn't going to take your engineering job within the next twenty years. Good luck.
