Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

“Care”?!?

After resigning due to my rank plummeting and being ready to move on, I didn’t receive a single call/email/conversation from any layer of management. The bitter taste of that indignity with which they treated me still hasn’t left my mouth.

So Care is a tough word to swallow about ExxonMobil.

Would you rather have fake empathy or nothing at all?

A guy that sits by me quit few weeks ago while I was on vacation.

New guy got his desk 2 weeks later.

Nobody notices he is gone.

@pls Eh, you just don’t like having a woman tell you what to do.

You’ve posted about this enough to where I was able to follow the breadcrumbs to people I know who have done work at the site. Everything I’ve been told indicates that you’re part of the problem and that the site itself is toxic from top to bottom.

@1suy Nobody tried getting you to stay.

Most of you are nowhere near as good or knowledgeable as you think you are. And I’m not talking about new technologies; I’m talking about stuff that’s been around for decades and can be easily found with a Google search.

It’s pathetic having to coach someone claiming decades of technical expertise and “institutional knowledge” through the basics of a problem. Even the interns are better in some cases.

Stay retired

I took the PIL almost two years ago after being totally blind-sided with an NSI. After 20+ years with the company, it was the most gut wrenching, scariest decision I’ve ever made. As the primary breadwinner for my large family, with school-aged children, it was terrifying.
There was ZERO care in the way they told me. These people who I’d known and worked beside for years, were suddenly my nemeses and treated all the contributions that I’d made (and received awards for in prior years!) like it was all trash.

What I quickly realized is that although I had a lot of connections, so many of the “skills” I learned at EM were useless in the marketplace. An over paid project manager whose #1 skill is coordinating conference calls and making powerpoint presentations, isn’t in particularly high demand. What I needed more of, were the actual SKILLS, that the contractors we hired had in spades!

Happy to report, I landed on my feet and have been doing extremely well. And whenever I read a thread like this, I am reassured it was 💯 the right decision to jump ship when I did. Although I would have passed the PIP, it’s highly likely, my morale and overall mental health would be trash.

Learn skills, get out, and do something that brings real value to the world. Your energy and life is too precious to be wasted at EM. Namaste. 🙏

I was 63 yo (engineer, upstream) when I told my super that I would retire within a year. He tried to get me to stay another year but my wife said no. 35 years working the oil field was enough! It was a good run. Thanks EM.

For those of you that constantly at like bad as--s on here and talk down to people. Just because you haven't been washed around in the tu-d bowl YET, doesn't mean you won't have your turn. As far as lashing out at people that were invested here, you are just a self centered narcissist!

When I let my manager know I was resigning he tried to persuade me to stay. Gave the company 2 weeks notice. I had other managers and coworkers reach out to me and asked me why I am leaving and to please stay. I let them know why and they understood. Told them that the continued outsourcing, company policies and uncertainty of the company were the reasons. To this day I still get contacted for help. I answer some questions but it depends on whos asking.

It's a sinking ship for US folks. GET OUT before it's too late. In the end Leadership does not care.

I'm extremely happy I left and want everyone to know there is life outside of XOM.

@kwl just send the letter (which should be no more than 3 sentences) to your manager. Anything else is just unnecessary. Action speaks by itself

I am planning to resign soon and day dream about how I’ll do it.

  1. Will I talk to some key leadership to see the reaction before putting in my letter
  2. Will I just hand in my letter
  3. Will I talk to my boss before handing him the letter to see his reaction…

I’ve had overall a good career here but current culture says that not going to continue. It’s getting worse every year.

The organisation doesn’t give a **** if u stay or go. Everyone is replaceable.

The way they role out nsi and ni doesn’t show care.

There isn’t any humanity or empathy in the organisation, specially in the managerial ranks, so how are they going to change culture to ‘care’.

Pipe dreams of a failing organisation

If you have to hurt people in order to feel powerful you are an extremely weak individual. Unfortunately the company has just enough of these narcissistic managers to ruin the company by getting transferred to other groups. I’ve seen it in Baton Rouge. Every single group is negatively impacted every time this manager is transferred yet she continues to remain on site.

Flip side of the spectrum is your boss asking why you’re leaving, you tell them, and they immediately tell you “oh yeah, we would have done that for you”. Exactly why didn’t you then?

The employer/employee relationship is purely transactional.

Once you’ve resigned, you’re of no value to them whatsoever. You’re done with them, they’re done with you.

People need to get out of the 20th century mindset that you have some bond with your employer beyond your paycheck. It just doesn’t apply in the year 2023.

I hope you find happiness OP. Good luck.
