Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How will we be notified if at risk?

Will my manager reach out or will it be a web letter?

HR doesn't have the bandwidth to make these calls, they will be a 1:1 with your direct mgr. HR has provided mgmt with a script to follow for the conversation(s).

Guys, if you are replying based on previous LRs - you're wrong. This is not an LR, it's letting you know you are an LR candidate and offering you a "voluntary" way out with an enhanced package. So previous LRs process is not relevant here.

My responses had been based on previous LR's, and so stated. I still think the previous LR process is very relevant. You will be notified that you are at risk (as communicated in the Cisco Check-in and the slide deck from the CEC homepage. The biggest difference for Phase 1 compared to LR's is that you have a time period to decide between 3 options. If you take the voluntary option, then it's just like the involuntary LR's. You are an employee for the next 30 days while you do (mostly nothing) and your manager ensures that your work can be assumed by someone else and any training/hand-off that is necessary is performed (usually doesn't need to happen). At the end of your 30 days employment, you turn in your badge, laptop, and company credit card if you had one. Then you sign your paperwork, mail it snail mail to HR and you get your lump sum severance package check(s) the following week after the expiration date of your agreement not to sue expires.

None of that is different than the usual LR process. It's the two options to take a leave of absence or stay in place and look for a new role that is different. And when the LOA ends, or your 60 days for searching expires, then the regular LR occurs except with a smaller package.

There's nothing voluntary about it. If you are "offered" you are gone regardless of your decision.

Someone posted something similar to the above quote to one of my responses. I was under the impression that Cisco was casting a wider net because of the term "at risk". Risk, by definition, implies a potential, not a certainty.

If Cisco is using the term "at risk" purely because of the (slim, minuscule, snowball's chance in hell) chance that you can chose option 3 to stay in place and look for a job inside/outside Cisco and avoid being cut, and that you will be cut as part of the phase 2 mandatory cuts in Dec, that's very misleading.

It would be nice if Cisco would clarify this. But, given that the Dec package is smaller than the "optional choice program" package offered in Oct, I would/will take the optional choice and not wait to see if I survive or not in Dec.

It will be a 1:1 meeting from your management. In my case, my SEM took the ER package, so it will come from the Director. I've already gotten my meeting notification, so now it's just a matter of finding out what the package looks like and hoping it's decent. Personally, I'm ok with it. Ready for a change.

if one choose the "voluntary" exit because of at risk, will unemployment be denied? is this like a regular resignation or will cisco tell employment was affected and hence UI is eligible. without unemployment, Medi-Cal state insurance also will be a problem. If resigned these benefits ae not eligible

My biggest fear at the moment is that I will not be LR'd. How messed up is that?

There's nothing voluntary about it. If you are "offered" you are gone regardless of your decision. I expect if it is the case of asking first, they are going to cast a very large net. Enough fear, stress, and bad health from it is sometimes a better way to go. If they want to get rid of 5,000, send it to 10,000. See how many bite. They may get more than they need and that will be fine too for Cisco.

So - - were you replying out of knowledge, or just because you thought it's the same process as a normal LR?

For some reason, I thought HR typically implemented layoffs on a Thursday. 1:1 invites sent out Wednesday night for layoff meeting Thursday morning.

I will decline all meeting invites, turn off phone, and hide under my bed.

Pretty sure the notifications will not begin before tonight for meetings to be held on Wednesday, 10/7.

if you get a 1:1 invite for a brief meeting, you will be chopped. cry a little then put on your big boys pants, take a deep breath then head to that meeting - it will be virtual, so yeah you don't have to look at him or her. you can flip a birdie as it will be only an audio call.
