Thread regarding CVS layoffs

I honestly don’t understand the point of RTO

Unless, ofc, it’s just to make us leave the company on our own. It doesn’t reduce the cost to anyone, just increases the costs for employees. It doesn’t improve personal performance or the overall efficiency. So what is it if not the stealthy cheap layoffs? Maybe it’s because of some benefits for companies due to arrangements with local govts, but I don’t believe it’s worth it. Maybe I’m wrong.

There is quite literally nothing that statistically proves RTO benefits employees or company performance in any way. Employees have been producing more and more while being remote. But a bunch of boomers in leadership who saw the idea in a Facebook conspiracy group now think RTO is all about “collaboration and togetherness”. There’s just SO much collaboration in the old run down cubicle offices that cvs still has, right?! Forcing employees to commute to the office and waste their personal time doing so is a complete sham.

Just an excuse to lay people off without paying severance.

What nobody has mentioned yet is that corporations can and often do get significant tax breaks from maintaining a certain percentage occupancy. The gist for local governments doing so is that high occupancy rates help support the local economy by bringing people into an area where they otherwise would have no business living in or even visiting and spending money there.

Want proof? To get credit for office attendance, all you need to do is swipe your badge. Doesn’t matter how long you stay. They don’t care if you’re there just to get a coffee with a colleague or pick up something you forgot at your desk. They just want you to scan your badge proving you were physically there that day.

Did you know tons of other companies are using the same color code system to track individual attendance?

For the re--rds who can't connect dots that means rich people are conspiring to control and extract even more than already do from you.

It sure did start out this way. My manager sent out a survey as to details of RTO. I was hired as remote prior to the pandemic and did not have an office near by. So, I was honest.

Needless to say, I got laid off. Always changing the rules and looking for ways to push people out the door. I worked hard, never missed work, always volunteered, and helped others.

What a sh-t show, using the same ole play book. Kind of like the return of the pandemic....

@mvi+1sT2bKH7 working spouse insurance surcharge -- when CVS owns a fu--ing insurance company. This company truly hates its employees and takes pleasure in torturing them.

Yep they did same thing last summer as well. Right before layoff announcement in Aug 2023 there was a push to come back 3 days/week starting 9/1. I wouldn’t doubt for a second that this an RIF strategy to save money by not having to pay out severances for people they can drive out with this new policy. Also if anyone has noticed, employee benefits are being quietly removed or reduced, e.g MIP target increased, tuition assistance and HSA assist discontinued as of June 1.

You nailed the answer in your very first sentence. It's to get folks to leave on their own. It's an attempt to cut down on their first round off anticipated layoffs later this year. Layoffs cost the company a lot of money whereby folks just leaving on their own is what they truly what they want.

It's hard not to notice that they didn't hit any of the bigwigs living in NY, FL or TX. Hum...

Appeal to Hanlon's razor. Other companies are doing it and so CVS is blindly following. Remember that this the same executive leadership that failed to capture in its guidance an incredibly obvious timing event. Remember that this is the same company that has wasted billions of dollars on Coram and Minute Clinic, and is actively wasting billions of dollars on Signify/Oak Street -- with the added benefit of now involving private equity firms.
