Thread regarding 3M layoffs

What did TEBG's restructuring achieve?

From my point of view, I have only seen more confusion. I wonder what has been the net impact of this huge restructuring.
Have you seen any positive impacts?
Anything that changed for the better?

Or is this just a poorly thought out initiative.

President of Automotive and SVP R&D, both operating committee of TEBG, have left after new group president came in. What’s going on with TEBG?

Yet we have R&D leader talk about how innovative products are in development and R&D folks saying yes.

More people at the VP level, more money spent on management ranks, more of strategy, PowerPoint slides, strategic plans.....

Less people to work at the bench level (lab bench, manufacturing...), lower emphasis on risk taking and coming up with new innovative products rather than incremental changes in existing products..

"automotive electrification, data center cooling, and 5G."

What is up that that list of random growth-market sounding buzzwords?

None of those is particularly significant TEBG's business and won't be for quite a while yet, if ever.

Look at the divisions in TEBG:
Automotive/Aerospace - Adhesives, sealants, tapes, and insulation - All of which apply to electric cars just as much as combustion.
Electronics - Adhesives, films, abrasives
Adv. Materials - Resins (even ex-PFAS), composites, ceramics/glass bubbles
CBTD - Films, tapes, adhesives, and yes, a healthy cleaning supply business.

CBTD really belongs in SIBG due to the root business model. (distribution-led, limited spec-in.)

TEBG does material science, sure, but now that we're strong away from PFAS, are cleaning chemicals gonna keep the BG afloat?

Because the moneymakers in TEBG are automotive electrification, data center cooling, and 5G.

She is slow to grasp and does not seem to understand 3M focus, material science. She is very focused on getting to be known as Auto person and software focused. There is a gap in what she is known for and what she has to deliver.

Strategy wasn’t clear from the get-go, and there is/was mass confusion. There are the same amount of VPs but some were not selected correctly and based on merely face time and ability to get the boss answers compared to track record. WB is driven but not sincere and just asks thousands of questions with her minions passing the questions down and further driving confusion and frustration.

The only thing it has achieved is making a bunch of people VPs and paying them extra $$ every year.

It is not going to increase sales or introduce innovative products in any meaningful way. Haven't seen any reorg done in the last 15 years that had any positive impact in this enterprise.

@hq this is the GE playbook of Jack Welch and James McNerney. It's loved by wall street but never works in the real world. Never ever work more than your 40 hours. Otherwise they will keep loading work on your back and no merit raises or promotions. If your boss has a hissy fit, too bad. They are part of the problem.

Like most reorgs, probably more responsibilities, less authority to do anything due to increased micromanagement.

Thinking is not clear, strategy is not clear, insecure so just listen to BB and HR. Until it is 3 years, then off to another company with higher position and salary.

I am still confused how restructuring in TEBG would have helped increase sales?

There aren’t enough products to make a splash in a fast growing electronics world. The best way to get the most ( or appear to get the most ) is by restructuring. However, the leaders have been promoting themselves in LinkedIn and winning award of recognition.

It did one hugely important thing. Made the VP look action focused in the eyes of BB. BB wants change, even if it's just shuffling the chairs on the deck of the SS 3M titanic. BB wants to show WS that he's "driven" while enjoying more expensive coffee each morning on his Florida yacht. Minnesota Nasty.
