Thread regarding Commscope Inc. layoffs

July 17th rumored to be a company wide layoff event

Like the post below I've now heard that there are plans for a major layoff event scheduled for July 17th. I haven't heard the actual percentage but apparently managers have been asked to provide names in multiple orgs. Looks like a bleed to try and boost the stock price. This company is the worst. Eddie Edwards should have been ousted after buying ARRIS. Overpaid just so they could get Ruckus. What a joke.

Sorry I coming in late on this topic... They laid off 22 people at Ruckus back on July 21st...
I know because I was on that list and they provided a list of positions affected per State Law.
Yes, I agree that if you don't have real information about the layoffs and want to complain... please do it elsewhere....

2nd Quarter results were truly a surprise. Seems the company and Alex Pease is doing. a great job managing expenses and keeping costs down while revenues were actually slightly up compared to the Q1. That is unprecedented in this COVID era. The main concern is still the debt which is sitting at $9.9B, but it looks like cash flow wise they are doing fine and, as a result, there were a very small number of layoffs than expected in the last round. As long as the cash flow stays steady and the debt repayment is continuing the be deferred to later years, things are looking up.

Commscope just announced the closing of the Greensboro NC facility, another 225 employees. If you work for Commscope in North America(except cable) in manufacturing, engineering, or R & D, you better start looking for a job now because your facility is next on their list. All NA facilities and some in Germany & Italy expected to close sooner than expected. This used to be a good company to work for, but since Eddie Edwards took over it's been in the toilet. Good luck getting all that fudge off, they are so far behind with R & D they have no chance to catch up with the competition. The NEW ERA products are the future not ARRIS & RUCKUS. They are all circling the drain.

One of the biggest problems is that Commscope has bought too many companies that do not fit together. Arris is an old company with products that don't make sense in the medium term. Ruckus is facing considerable challenges in the marketplace. Aruba, Cisco are miles ahead of Ruckus. The fact that HPE has now bought Silver Peak and integrated it into Aruba is a tactical and medium-term move. HPE is making its 5G Lab hub public with strategic partners. Commscope has nothing of the sort to offer. The company is too big and belongs filleted. Good people left or will leave.
The CEO does not have his finger on the pulse. The leadership team is thrown together and the worst thing is that everyone is trying to get by somehow and makes himself the servant of a company that has no future in this form. Corona is giving the company significant damage right now. Other companies get away with far fewer dents, although they also lay off workers to stay dynamic. Commscope has employees who have been with the company for well over 20 years and can only sell cables and wait for the customer to knock at the sales door. I believe that the company will split someday or they will get rid of uneconomic divisions to get back on track. I'm tired of wallowing in the mud that pretends to be a perfect world within Commscope. I have left the company and I am happy about my move.

Set top boxes are dead, streaming device have won that battle. Cable modem speeds would be fine if you can get everyone to upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1. With everyone working from home faster upload speeds are needed and most cable operators don’t setup the networks that way. Fiber-optic if you can get it at home gives you true Ethernet like capability. More and more rely on free WIFi or their neighbor leaving it open. As for the severance most companies 3 years ago were about 4 years per year of service but now most companies have switched to 1-2 years per year of service. You can thank all of that M&A activity for that trend as corporate bonds were to cheap over the last few years. For those who are let go, contact previous managers who have moved on as your first step as they know you best and are more likely to hire you sooner than someone who doesn’t know you.

With severance package not being good. It no longer makes sense to wait for it. If you can find a job now, get out. There are jobs out there, but it the current situation has the number being reduced. Layoffs have been a constant event there the entire time I was there. They will be closing locations since it will no longer make sense to keep them for such a small number of personnel. Virginia is closing, San Diego, Linkoping, and probably Horsham will be next. Maybe 5G and optics will regain momentum after the COVID recovery, but the cable side will require either something that can blow away Roku and Amazon or just plain old luck. CommScope probably just wanted Ruckus and mainly the patents. Similar to what Google did for Motorola Mobility.

This company is circling the drain. If you have t started looking for something else, better start now. CommScope completely f—ed itself buying ARRIS. Now both companies are f—ed. Thanks Eddie, you dumb bumpkin. Worse than Stanzione was for ARRIS. Both are stupid asses whose egos led to the destruction of both companies.

Given the now established pattern, the next round off layoffs will come just prior to the release of Q3's ER. With the likelihood of the current headwinds becoming a twister, due to the Co debt burden, more layoffs could now occur at any moment. A new set of lean and hungry Sales staff are required who are able to sell ice to Eskimos.

I never understood the rationale for Commscope buying ARRIS out. Both ARRIS and Commscope bid to buy Ruckus. ARRIS outbid Commscope and bought Ruckus for $800 million. In other words, Commscope didn't want to spend $800 million on Ruckus, but buying ARRIS for $8 billions was a good idea?🤔 What kind of Mickey Mouse business school did these guys go to? Both ARRIS and Commscope are/were a no-growth companies. In which universe did it make sense to merge them? Just to get Ruckus? Absurd! It seems like Commscope bought ARRIS without doing any kind of due diligence or even thought as to what a near future might be like. All of senior management should have had a boot applied to their asses for the idea and the BOD should've been fired for being asleep at wheel and letting this deal for even be considered and once the deal went through and things went South within first quarter or two, for not firing the senior "leadership".

If you were with Motorola, you experienced regular layoffs for years. ARRIS also had regular hits. If you didn't know those impacted, you may not have known because MOT and ARRIS had a weird policy that did not allow managers to communicate changes to others in their department. Literally, ARRIS HR met with all managers in a group meeting and forbade communication on layoffs with anyone not directly impacted. Only those impacted could communicate the change. Very weird and made other employees far more upset/concerned. Total is about 300 across the company. I hope everyone lands safely. Past experience indicates those impacted during past/recent events have generally found better opportunities and better pay/benefits. Work your contacts. Good luck!

Got an email today from that stupid hick Eddie Edwards:

"This week, we have begun taking necessary steps to improve our long-term competitive position, which unfortunately includes workforce reductions. These reductions will be taking place across most business segments and functions as we continue to right-size the business where required globally.

In addition, we are rationalizing our global footprint by flexing our global manufacturing capabilities to adapt to market changes. We recently announced the planned closure of our manufacturing site in Forest, Virginia, in December 2020."

This company is circling the drain and the leadership is completely inept. Lost several friends this week who have been around since the day of Motorola. They got absolutely f—ed over by Commscope changing the severance policy not even 20 days before they started removing people. Absolutely horrible company.

If anyone is reading this and looking to maybe work for the company, please rethink your choice if you have the option to.

Gone are the days when folks could just enjoy their jobs. Nowadays it's constant anxiety who will be tapped next which is extremely distracting. The pattern appear to be layoff folks just ahead of each quarterly ER. It's hard to feel that employees are the most valuable asset when they are the first to be cut rather than finding new ways to generate revenues.

I know of at least 8 people and I’m sure there were many more. This was not just a rumor, a decent size lay-off just happened. It’s a shame, some of these people I’ve worked with for 14 years now and they’ve been with the company even longer. I’m feeling lucky to still be employed, yet nervous for what the future holds

They are doing it in small increments to get around the WARN law which requires companies to not lay off more than a small number of people at a given time or they would have to give over 60 days notice. There was another round back in May, now this in July, so there should be more in the upcoming months.

The word is that seasoned Sales staff were cut today. 2 weeks to ER, so it is expected that headcount reduction will continue to improve the numbers. No surprise given that the company reported having difficulties in accessing buildings to carry out product installation.
There are also speculations that the company will be taken private, and that the BOD will be making a decision within a couple of weeks!!?

Not a scam, more a speculation. Listen to the June 3 webcast where it is clearly stated that further cost cutting measures will be taken if the situation doesn't improve. It is fair to say that the fear of a 2nd wave covid spike still represents uncertainty to the business. Q2 financial report due in August so expect to see cost cutting actions to improve the numbers.

"ARRIS bought the non-cell phone portion of Motorola in 2015. Both Motorola and CommScope were part of General Instruments,..."

No, your history is not correct. Motorola was never a part of General Instrument (no s at the end). It's the opposite. Motorola bought General Instrument (GI), making GI part of Motorola.

In the mid 90s, GI owned Commscope and General Semiconductor, but GI sold off both of them in 1997. Then around the year 2000, Motorola bought General Instrument (which, for emphasis, no longer owned Commscope).

Around the mid to late 2000s, Motorola started selling off various divisions. Around 2010-2011, what remained of Motorola split into two companies: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility. Motorola Mobility consisted of the cell phone division of Motorola plus the old General Instrument they had bought in 2000.

Google came along in 2012 and bought Motorola Mobility (which, again, included the cell phone division plus the old GI). Google kept the cell phone patents but quickly sold the rest of the cell phone operations to Lenovo. Google then sold the old General Instrument part of Motorola Mobility to Arris.

Arris was later bought by Commscope in 2018-2019.

So in a way, General Instrument once owned Commscope, and now Commscope owns what is left of General Instrument.
