Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Is SDO delivery closing going to a outside carrier???

I just delivered to the 2nd customer who has asked me when the new company starts delivering their orders. Some of the other drivers here are hearing the same thing. Anybody know anything about this????? I need my job!

Why would you hope that SDO closes?

i must be about the only one, from what I can see, who actually HOPES his SDO closes down. The position, workload, company and coworkers are a pathetic excuse for fairness. I'm getting worked to death and have nothing to show for it. My supervisor is a diva who flies off the handle at the smallest things and cannot coordinate a bathroom break let alone a SDO Wish I'd never taken this freaking job. While I work my fingers to the bone, everyone I work with has a minimum of a week of vacation per month scheduled. F this place

Yes, hearing Pembroke Park/Miami was being closed was not exactly a shock, but a bit of a surprise. That's not a small market. From everything I've been able to gather, there's not necessarily any rhyme or reason to the closings beyond the obvious overall cost-cutting across the quad-channel. In other words, larger markets aren't immune. Had the same underground feelers in early May when the first announcements of possible SDO closures were made re: local 3rd party carrier employees who were friends with SDO drivers telling them on the sly that the local Staples routes were already put out for bid (this is literally days after the company tells us they're only "exploring future alternate delivery scenarios"). So we knew this was coming. When Office Depot went 3rd party in our state, it only took about a year for all the Depot delivery facilities in our state to close down and be transitioned to 3rd party. Now, am hearing the same thing today Heads Up! posted, that there are additional SDO closings beyond the 12 already announced. Naturally, it gets difficult to read the tea leaves, because so much of the info is being spread piecemeal via word-of-mouth (typical of the company to dissemble, rather than just being forthright about it). Won't be surprised if the SDO location I'm concerned most about is closed down as early as tomorrow. Was hoping to make it past winter peak next year, but oh well. At this point, after 4 months of anxious wondering, I'd just as soon KNOW one way or the other.

Well we are safe as of now in SoCal.............getting rid of these 12 SDO's is just the beginning. If this works out in the higher ups best interest, they will to cut more and more SDO's till we are all 3rd party. And they have discouraged us drivers against union. Ha. What a joke. This is the problem when a big corporation like staples goes public. The shareholders can give a shit less on the frontline employees lives they destroy. As long as their stock continues to rise. no matter what it takes. CUTTHROAT!!!!!!

Well, they are closing the Pembroke Park SDO (Miami) which is a big operation and keeping open Jacksonville that only had 5 drivers. Does not make any sense on how they picked which locations.

So any news on the Little Rock, AR SDO? We got told that we're not on the chopping block YET, but I find that somewhat hard to believe given the small market around here. Little Rock isn't exactly a mega-lopolis. What should I look for/listen for? What sort of SDOs are they closing? Small ones? Large ones? I heard Memphis is closing......it's so hard for me to think that they would close down Memphis and keep the tiny Little Rock open. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

I agree as a former CE employee - CE Managers cared about their employees and we all had fun. Ever since Staples came along everything went downhill. No more quarterly bonuses for drivers and we all got a 2% raise while Ron gave himself a sweet bonus. Upper mgmt in Framingham does not care about the employees. Good luck in the future as a lot of customers will be leaving when we go 3rd party delivery via lasership. Worst courier service ever!!!!

My delivery service will be one that is closing. I started off working for Corporate Express 15 years ago. They are going to have Ontrac start delivering all of our packages after November 15. Have you had experience with Ontrac they are horrible at delivery. Our customers aren't going to be happy. After Ontrac found out that we were being let go they asked if we could train their drivers. Ya right. Before November 14th can I stop buying Staples stock and contributing to my 401k? How do I go about doing that?

3-4 other SDO's will be added to the fall closings that was announced 9/16. I will update everyone when a correct count and those locations have been determined. The following locations will in Q4 with a project close date of 2/20/15. 10545,10586,10596,10316,6043,6359,6117,6188,6227,6280,6357. I will get more updates as I know more. I wish everyone that is affected by this the very best. The sad reality is that the ones making these decisions are clueless and could care less about our customers and associates. I've been here almost 4 years and have never in my life worked in such a hostile, cut throat environment.

Announcements we made to us yesterday morning 9/16, that our SDO will be closing the doors Nov. 15th. Our last day that we will be working is Nov. 14th, this was not a huge surprise to some of us. 70+ (not quite sure on the exact number) people, including service delivery administrators, supervisors and delivery-related employees, will all be laid-off. There were a couple of us that had 3rd party guys asking about the delivery operation at the beginning of the summer. I kept tell the guy I wasn't sure I haven't heard anything yet. At first I thought he was talking about our FC that was closing. Our location has a FC/SDO integrated with each other. We were also told that there are 11 other SDOs that were getting the some news this morning. That makes 12 that got the news on or about 9/16, that goes along with the other 8 SDOs that were closed down prior. That's a total of 20 SDOs that will be closed by the end of the year. That's barring any other that get the news by then. I have been with company for almost 12 year. Something has to said for the merger of CE and Staples that has caused this. If your telling me that staples can make it through the recession (without the CE merger) but not make it through the upswing of a better economy (with the CE merger) it seems to me that it was a bad business move that we have to pay for now. This is just reality of business in America, the big guys want to get BIGGER and the little guys are the ones that pay the price. I hope for the best for all the works that got the news or that are going to get the news.

Hi all, does anyone know if Business Interiors will be impacted by all of these closings?

Announcement just made earlier tonight that the Pembroke Park, Florida delivery facility is being closed by the end of the year. 68 people, including service delivery administrators, supervisors and delivery-related employees, will all be laid-off starting November 17th and ending December 19th. Staples has been soliciting bids from 3rd party carriers for larger markets/cities for several months now, so even if the dozen SDO's on the chopping block for this year turn out to be smaller markets, it's not necessarily a given that larger market delivery facilities will be 'safe' or immune.
