I was laid off after 7 months of working as a sales representative. I wasn't alone. There were 2 others that experienced that same thing on Friday morning - who knows how many more will follow. This virus situation has created a mess in Orlando and we are just the beginning. They said they were downsizing, right when all the businesses in Orlando may have to shut their doors - what a coincidence. Beware - this is a terrible company to work for - there quotas are too high and you will never be promoted as they initially promised.
January historically is WB Masons busiest month and the company is down 2%. Ownership is scrambling to figure out how to get growth but fail to see that when you screw over your commissioned sales reps it’s hard to get people motivated to sell for you. Not to mention the loads they put on the products is outrageous and prices them out of a lot of opportunities.
Mason is only up 1% for the 1st Qtr and losing good reps due to slashing the commission plan. They have new, very large DC in NJ, however the rest of the company distribution is a mess. Ownership and Executives have no idea what’s going on out on the streets. Very out of touch.
Hearing multiple recent rumors that Staples/Sycamore is again trying to buy WB Mason....

our drivers say that the mason people are telling them that mason
is pulling out of essendant. their contract with us expires in july.
they have already stopped us doing their same day picks. they also got
a contract with consumers last year and a really big warehouse to go
with it. of course nothing has been or likely will be confirmed by mgmnt of
either company. they have been asked and have given evasive responses.

own fulfillmnt ctrs so they can pull out of essendant altogether, and

Wrong. Per the FTC, Staples purchased Essendant. If SP pulls out of Staples, Staples still owns Essendant. They can choke the local suppliers to death.

Everyone at WB Mason should be worried. But what I’ve heard, your current owner would fit right in with the snakes at Staples. But that’s just what Staples management wants Staples Assiciates to think. When they bought CE they assimilated CE into their culture and now Staples has been assimilated into SP culture of greed, distrust, lies, incompetence and cult-ism. They will eventually purge you out just as they purge almost every CE employee that did not assimilate to their hive-like mentality. Assimilate or die is the new motto. No more critical thinking, no more ‘Say it like it is’ only do as we say or we have an early retirement plan for you.
If it happens, I’d prepare my resume quickly because ALL your accounts will be assimilated into the lowest paid sales persons account base.

Staples offered to buy WB about three years ago and was told to pound sand. So why would they want to be bought out now. WB is not in a position to buy Staples.
Do you have information to suggest that WB Mason is not doing well? Last I heard, they were smoking the pants off of Staples in the Northeast? Has this changed? Core office supplies in general is declining though.
