Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Need advice: job offer from Qualcomm - low salary

I got a job offer from qualcomm and the recruiter told me they are at the top of their scale. I expected much higher of an offer as a director. Why are qualcomm salaries so low and why do people choose to work for peanuts in San Diego? I much prefer my Bay Area salary. San Diego isn’t much cheaper.

Sorry to ask you a very basic question : why do you want to join a company with no future? Can't you find a betterplace to work?

HR does not hire top of range. Negotiations are expected so first offer on table is not necessarily the last. Ask for relocation bonus in addition to normal relo package. Ask for sign on bonus.

In San Diego salaries tend to be low because Qualcomm - while they have dropped drastically from a top-5 place to work to a sub-50 place to work - they are still #1 in H1B hires from India. And the keep the inefficiency high so there is never enough salary for everyone to have.

I left Qualcomm for FANG and an immediate 50% pay raise, 2 years later, 100%. But I actually sacrificed lifestyle as houses in a good school district are 4x the $$$ per square foot ft in the Bay area ($300 vs $1200).

Qualcomm is a diseased cow. You would never jump from a smelly ship onto a burning ship, would you? Do you work at Facebook? There are exceptions in that case ....

Why would anyone in their right mind want to go from FANG to QC? Regardless of the RSUs, it is meaningless if you aren't around till vest or if the stock keeps falling because they don't really have anything in the pipeline besides the 5G smoke and mirrors.

I went QC to FANG and wished I left 3 to 5 years earlier. Someone said it best, you are 20 years late for the party at QC.

In San Diego salaries tend to be low due to weak job market. Supply and demand situation.

I'm not at Qualcomm now, but based on this graph, I make more than the Qualcomm directors, and I don't have any reports. If that helps any.

Well the stock is worthless. Negotiate a higher base. $250k base is doable l

No, you're learning that you are jealous because you think you are better than you really are.

600k is for VP level. Dir level should be 360k or no higher than 400k in san diego.

220-260K base for a Director position? What are you smoking?

180K base start for Sr. Staff?

Don't listen to this guy. That might be the salary for the bay area but not in San Diego.

That's way over valued comparing what you will do at QC.

@1yry not sure what you mean, here is the public dataset available for h1b's it does not include bonus and stocks also note that h1b's are generally paid less.

base of senior staff is 180k and 60k in stock and this is for entry level i.e. recently promoted.

Its clear that recruiter is low balling you. For director your base should be in the range of 220-260k

stocks should be in 100-150k range.Your total pay should be in the range of 400-600k.

I went the other way. - QC to FANG and got a major tcomp upgrade.

Don’t go to QC.

You’ll be frustrated by the excessive politicking and abundance of loudmouth id--ts.

The caliber of engineering is way lower vs FANG.

Make sure you negotiate a minimum payout of, say, a year's salary if you are laid off in the first 3 years. Note that this costs the company nothing if they expect to not lay you off. If they refuse to negotiate, then you know what they are thinking.

Asking for advice here is a bad idea. All you’ll see here is disgruntled employees and ex-employees. Throw in the horrible racism that pops up and you’ll get a good feeling of what it will be like to work at the Q.

To OP. Many are trying to get laid off or are fleeing this chaotic org. There are also far too many at director level so its kinda astonishing to read they are hiring.

They offer 90% of salary for the position so that can give you raises and not price you out of the role.

what is your offer?its possible that recruiter may be low balling! SD and bay area are not comparable but isn't pea nuts either. If you are not in FANG QC should be able to offer competitive salary
