Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Would you have stayed?

For all you oldtimers who have 20+ years do you regret all the time, blood, sweat and tears you gave to this company? What would you recommend to a recent grad just starting out? I’ve got less than 2 years in and so far it’s looking good. I’d love to build a career here and was wondering if anyone has regrets.

Retired WITH a pension at 55 and was happy to get the F out of there after 30 years. I cannot imagine how a new hire would ever want to work without a pension. I was hourly grade 9 with 4 years of USAF education prior. Only reason I waited until 55 is because I am covered medically. New contracts sold out all the new hires. Sad

Good job man and sincerely happy for you!

Did you take classes while being a unionized employee or were you already in the office?

I have been laid off in 2020. I was devastated at the time. However, in retrospect, I found a new job where everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is better: better pay, better benefits, better medical insurance, better opportunities. I will not come back to Boeing any time soon. The fiasco with 787, 737, and yet to be identified airplanes does not sound good. I am making way more money and work on a lot more interesting and rewarding projects than Boeing ever provided for me. The key is while staying with Boeing: get education. Boeing paid for multiple muster degrees of mine, multiple certifications, and provided other training opportunities that I utilized and that actually helped me.

The only racism Boeing engages in today is against older white men. You would have to be blind not to recognize who they target for layoffs.

No. I have been there over 30 years and early on I witnessed the racism on people of color. The underlying message was that Boeing was a white mans job and the company promoted people of color to meet the token black man quota. Sure things have changed now but they are playing damage control because they know the past was sketchy.

With Pension = Absolutely No Regrets
No Pension = All Regrets
You in 15 years = All Regrets
Recommendation : Seek an engineering job at Paccar (Kenworth &Peterbilt Trucks). Their engineering center resides in Kirkland &Bellevue and they provide a Pension &a Christmas bonus.

Lockheed Martin and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have entered into
a new agreement that will see the world’s largest defense contractor
helping to manufacture and sell Israeli-made air defense systems —
taking over work previously handled by Boeing.
As Boeing’s only remaining expertise is incompetence.

Let's be clear. Boeing did not take away the pension, the skid marks in the union voted to eliminate the pension so they could go buy X-boxes.

Nothing happens without the union OKing it.

So, if you have regret, thank the newbies in the union.

The only thing that neutralizes the regrets is the pension. Without that it'd be all regret. Now that they have taken away the pension you will be facing only regrets. You would do well to get the he-l out and stop wasting your time while you have tbe chance.

Get out of this business while you still can. Go back to school and get a different major. In a couple of years you are a free man.

I regret majoring in engineering and working in the aerospace industry. If I did it all over again I would either major in healthcare like nursing or computer science. It’s simply not worth it. Engineering school is very difficult and too much job insecurity.

I do not know anyone who works in this industry who recommends for young people to go into engineering or particularly aerospace.

Boeing has made it clear they have no interest in employees over age 40. Who wants to work in a profession where your career is over at that stage of your life?

I agree with a few of these post. I doubt commercial will last another 25 years as China will be taking part soon. Get that secret clearance as military / defense will remain. I just think Condit did us all in with his MceeD merger. Things have really changed since the pre merger times.

The world in the next 18 years is not going to be the same as the world was for the past 22 years. Just look back at last year. Nobody can predict what will happen. We are living shaky times... If you are doing well, stick to it while it lasts.

We need to focus on just you! You should stay with Boeing if you own a house. However, if you do not then leave Boeing and relocate to an area with a better cost of living and strong economy.

I would say yes. All things considered Boeing offers great pay and benefits. I always thought of it like working for the government since it's such a big company.
Find a VP that will mentor you along the way, (don't stay in the same department more than a few years) and don't pay any mind to those with negative attitudes.

Sharpen your skills, take as many trainings (inside and outside of the company) and get the secret clearance if you can.
