Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Laid Off

6 years ago I left my previous job to join Citi thinking Citi was a top company who valued its employees. I now find myself unemployed in the worst job market. Ive contacted my previous employer and they are not hiring but my co-workers who I left behind are all still there. My advice if you plan on joining Citi is as soon as you get 1 - 2 years in start applying at other companies because there are to many 20 - 30 year Citi veterans at Citi and they will let you go before the people that are soon ready to retire. Be very very careful accepting a job at Citi.

If anyone wants to know or see a pattern of when Layoffs are done, this may or may not be correct but in 2023 some of my co-workers started disappearing because they got Laidoff when they stopped replying about when they will complete their parts of projects. The Layoffs happened in January 2023, March 2023, August 2023, October 2023, November 2023. As other posters have already posted and informed everyone on this Site, it seems like Citi takes a break between March and early Fall to ascertain how much money it has in reserves for Severance for the next round of Layoffs And also, which employees are remaining, who Citi wants to keep or Not keep.

I worked at Citi for 20+ yrs and was laid off this last go around. I know of several other ppl laid off who fall into this same category. Citi is NOT favoring long term employees.

I feel the same way. I didnt leave but found myself outside the IN crowd. I tried to be part of it but like high school seems very familiar on how childish we become. Somehow, we all have to overcome the politics.

Post ID: @OP+1sgReUfH To the OP: I've seen your situation or similar happen several times before. A former co-worker left JPM Chase for a job that was an easier commute closer to her house and of course, higher compensation and as a Director. Two years later she rejoined the same JPMC department at the same level when she left, as VP. During those 2 years when she was at the new company, some of her co-workers who were not as skilled or experienced as her, were promoted to Director. So in other words, it looked like she regressed at least in rank (maybe not salary) back to VP while her co-workers and competitors were promoted above her.
When it became obvious by the end of the year that her managers did not want to promote her to Director the next year, she jumped ship again after having rejoined JPMC for only 15 months. In her new job, she's a Director with higher compensation, etc.. Politics and punishing her for leaving 3+ years prior played into the reasons why JPMC did not want to elevate her to Director when it was obvious her time arrived to become Director. People never really change from the way they were in high school. People tend to retain at least 70% of their persona from adolescence. The way people behaved in the schoolyard or high school is the way they are today, as "adults". Never forget that. This includes bullying behaviour, mind games, politics, harassment, coercions, intimidations, etc..

Post ID: @1xds+1sgReUfH Some of us may or may Not be bitter. But as the OP and others posted, they left their stable previous Employer for a dysfunctional H3LLH0le. BofA is Not struggling. Another Citi genius who does Not read the news and the PPTs shown in the Town Halls that show BofA is kicking Citi's A$$, although Not as good as JPMC and GS are kicking Citi's A$$.

Post ID: @1hcy+1sgReUfH Why would or should Laidoff employees tell Citi HR, Managers or Citi Legal Dept anything ??? This would be like the fox guarding the hen house or allowing the wolf to go inside the 3 Little Pigs' house, only for the 3 Little Pigs to get eaten. Once Citi or any Employer Fires or Lays you off, you have NO obligation to them and must contact a plaintiff-side Employment Lawyer if Citi harasses you. It's NO one's Fvcken business who you choose to socialize with even if those people are your former co-workers.

Some of you sound very bitter. Some people stay at Citi because they have worked in corporate america long enough to know the grass isn't greener. Do you want to work for Wells, BoA, or one of these struggling regionals? Or join Google and Meta and be laid off in 2 weeks anyway?

First, don’t tell Citi anything about your personal life.

Second, if you get harassed by Citi for having friends that used to be Citi employees, inform your manager, HR and Citi legal that you believe you are unnecessarily being harassed for such and are seeking outside legal counsel to see if you have a viable law suit.

Question: Is it true that Citi is mandating and ordering that Laidoff employees are Not permitted to speak with current employees?? What if we have a friendly relationship with the Laidoff employees? And who the Fvck would know which Laidoff employees spoke with current employees unless someone blabbed about the conversations?? This is very 1984 and Totalitarian as well as the TV Show, Handmaid's Tale. This may also be Illegal. Laidoff employees Still have Employment and Labor Rights. Citi does Not want its Laidoff and current employees to compare notes and information.

So true. I have never seen a company like Citi before. People are constantly bragging about their tenure at Citi and how many months of severance they will get if paid off. Pathetic. 😄

Generalization can be dangerous.

I know many who change employer often and wonder why anyone would hire them and l also know many who have been with same employer for decades and feel puzzled why they never switched because they are good and will not have difficulty finding another job.

Sticking to same job doesn’t necessarily mean you are incompetent; there are other reasons too - laziness, comfort zone, inability/unwillingness to relocate, culture fit, less politics, etc.

Post ID: @bms+1sgReUfH This is true. Good one. Citi is the Last Resort employer like McDonalds, Fast Food or Retail. LOL! Several posters said on this Site that one reason Citi has so many Lifers, Dinosaurs with antiquated "thinking" and wrong "solutions", 15 years, 20 years, 30 years tenure is because these employees know they can Not find a better job outside of Citi. And so they stay at Citi......forever. This and Citi tends to attract Only or Mostly low caliber employees who are the Real Banks' Rejects. LOL!!! Citi's only hope for survival or having a modicum of and traces of its DNA still detectable is to get acquired in pieces or whole by a Real Bank, similar to how JPMChase acquired Chemical Bank and Banc One.

Good advice ! Citi is an Employer ONLY for people who are desperate or Unemployed. Citi is NOT an Employer of choice, but an Employer for the desperate. Desperate does Not necessarily mean unemployed. Desperate could mean that you're currently employed, but interviewing externally. Except that there are so few favorable external job openings, but you want to get the H3LL Out of your currently employer. This means the Only job applicants/employees/Svckers Citi can attract are those who have few if any other options or do Not have skills or work experience other Employers want. Basically, Citi is the McDonalds or Fast Food employer Last resort for job seekers who can Not find better than working in Fast Food or even bricks and mortars Retail. So Sad.
