@8csc
drama queen. Would you have preferred they don’t say anything, then suddenly on 15 Dec call everyone into a room and say you’re fired? I can tell you, the folks who left in 2021 gone in 2 months after announce, hardly had time to do their VPE, refinance their mortgage, etc. Don’t compare us to contractors lah, you can also walk away and say you’re done. Contractors got no package bro.

Shell announced cuts >1 year before releasing people; Chevron in SG announced in August and only recently told people selected for next year’s release. Lol this is our industry norm. At least I already done VPE, seen my med specialist, applied for credit cards in the last 1 month.

It’s perfectly reasonable to have negative emotions - feel betrayed or angry or disappointed with company, because it’s big impact to livelihood. But don’t unnecessarily let keyboard warriors make us angry for nothing. We need to focus on what we can do and see beyond this company. We will be okay

This ExxonMobil layoff system is honestly one of the most shameless things I’ve ever seen. The way they let people hang for one whole month like dangling us there just to see who breaks first is downright cruel. And they dare to call this “flexibility”? Please lah, it’s just them giving themselves the power to drag people around however they like. This is way worse than being a contractor. At least contractors can say “I’m done” and walk away. Here, if you’re waiting for the package, you’re trapped in limbo and cannot move, cannot resign, cannot plan your life. Like kena held hostage for their convenience.

And the best part? They actually had the audacity to end their briefing slides with “We have values.” Wah, that one really next-level irony. Values? Where? In which universe? Because what we’re seeing here is the complete opposite. Don’t talk about values when you’re running a system that treats people like disposable parts.

Whoever designed this whole setup clearly never thought about the human cost. It’s unethical, it’s manipulative, and honestly it feels like modern-day captivity dressed up in corporate language. Someone really needs to look into how this kind of practice is allowed to pass off as “standard procedure.”

I genuinely hope one day the people behind this mess are held responsible for the stress, uncertainty, and mental strain they’ve dumped on everyone. This whole thing is way out of line, and they seriously need to wake up their idea. Hope they and their family kena karma. Ameen.

If you are a SLS doing ranking, would you put a person who is confirmed leaving in the next 1 year above any of your guys who are not? Would you spend time and effort to fight for this person in ranking, knowing it won't matter in a year's time?

If this person then gets PIP, would you spend effort and time to draft a realistic plan for him/her? Knowing that this person will he automatically booted out within a few quarter's time.

Good luck to those whose severance are in late 2026 or in 2027.

@8cra why was this morning’s webinar nonsense? I’d rather be told early, than to one day turn up at work and realised I can’t log in and escorted out. I respect that management tried to give us info as early as possible, rather than hide a lot of things under CA, and have rumours flying around.

There’s no perfect way to execute a retrenchment, to be honest. And remember all our career trainings all these years, the three-circle Venn diagram, it’s always “company needs first”.

Yeah I’ll attract a lot of scolding here but we want to be treated like adults so also need to behave like it

@8cra to be honestly, most of us do not have any choice. We are just waiting to be told what is our future like. We still need our salary.

I’ve never heard so much nonsense as I did in this morning’s webinar. Dangling the severance package like a carrot is beyond demeaning. At this point, if you have any self-respect left, you’d walk away, severance or not. There’s far more dignity in leaving on your own terms than in staying beholden to an organisation that clearly doesn’t respect you.

@8cqw how sad to be living a life with so much disdain and hate for people who’ve never done anything wrong to you. To be honest, HBF folks are thankful to our colleagues at the site. I hope you see a EHAP counsellor. And it’s hard to imagine someone with this level of anger will be kind to their family so please be kind to yours. I won’t see you at the site cos I’m leaving. Take care.

Glad these arrogant b-ms at HBF are being taught a lesson that they are not infallible. All of us at the manufacturing sites are the ones doing the hard work on the ground

Get rid of those useless HBF fools who only yap all day but no value to the company. Trim the fat and sack them. Now you know all your jobs can be outsourced to India: ours cant. So who has value now?

So happy that finally they got their retribution. This should serve as a wake up call to the remaining monkeys who think they are better than us. See you at site soon!

Energy and chemicals player Aster has set aside US$2 billion in investments for the Singapore market, and is still looking at more deals, said its group chief financial officer Andre Khor.

“There are a few other deals in the pipeline,” he told The Business Times in an exclusive interview after the company signed a sustainable aviation fuel deal with Aether Fuels on Tuesday (Nov 11).

“I cannot disclose (the deals due to) confidentiality but, fundamentally, we’ll pull it all together. It’s about unlocking synergies; it’s about integrating Indonesia (and) Singapore,” said Khor.

@8c82+16zEvLP3 (JUST GOOGLE IT, IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE TO FIGURE OUT RETRENCHMENT)

July 30, 2025

Retrenchment in Singapore: What You Need to Know About Notice Periods and Compensation
As business priorities evolve, retrenchment has become increasingly common. Here’s what workers in Singapore should understand about their rights, notice periods, and compensation when facing job loss.

As businesses respond to changing market demands and digital transformation, restructuring has become more common. For some employees, this has led to the challenging experience of retrenchment.

If you’re facing retrenchment, it’s natural to have many questions: Why did this happen? What am I entitled to? Do I still need to serve my notice period? Understanding your rights during this time can give you the clarity and confidence to move forward.

What is a retrenchment letter?
A retrenchment letter formally notifies you that your position is being made redundant. It includes essential information such as your last day of work and the components of your compensation package.

This letter can also be helpful for future job applications, claims for government support, or resolving any post-employment queries, such as confidentiality obligations or non-compete clauses.

How is retrenchment compensation calculated in Singapore?
Under Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) guidelines, employees who have served at least two years are typically eligible for retrenchment benefits. While there’s no mandated sum, the payout should follow what’s stated in your employment contract or what’s mutually agreed during the announcement.

According to MOM’s guidelines, most employers offer between two weeks and one month of salary for every year of service. A typical retrenchment package includes:

Salary up to your last day
Payment for unused annual leave
Retrenchment benefit based on tenure
Pro-rated bonuses or AWS
Any other contractual payments
Example:

Monthly salary: $8,000
Years of service: 5
Unused leave: 10 days
Retrenchment benefit: $40,000 (one month per year)
Leave encashment: $3,692.30
Final payout: Approximately $51,692.30
What happens to your notice period after retrenchment?
A common concern is whether employees must continue working during their notice period after being retrenched. While there’s no legal obligation, companies may offer different options.

  1. Payment in lieu of notice
Most employers in Singapore offer compensation instead of requiring employees to serve their notice. This approach allows for a quicker and smoother transition out of the role, while maintaining mutual respect and dignity.

Payment in lieu includes your salary for the notice period, and is taxable but not subject to employer CPF contributions. Many companies prefer this method to help employees avoid discomfort in the workplace.

  1. Garden leave
Garden leave allows you to stay officially employed (and paid) while being released from active duties. You remain bound by your contract, including clauses that restrict you from starting work at another company during the period. This is common for senior roles, or positions that involve working with sensitive or proprietary information

  2. Extended notice periods
Some employers may request that you continue working through your notice period, especially if you are handling ongoing projects.

While this isn’t mandatory, seeing projects through to the end can help you showcase your dedication and outcomes on your resume. It also helps you to preserve goodwill with your employer, which can help you secure a positive professional reference.

What to consider when deciding your notice period

It’s best to discuss and align on your last day with your employer. Here are some steps you can take:

Take time to understand the retrenchment terms and clarify anything you’re unsure of.

Review your employment contract thoroughly and keep a record of all communications and documents.

Schedule a follow-up with HR to clarify any remaining questions, such as your eligibility for career counselling, insurance coverage, or other support services.

While some employees may feel compelled to serve their notice period out of loyalty, it’s essential to consider your personal well-being and your ability to move forward meaningfully. Choosing to leave an environment that is stressful or uncomfortable immediately can be more beneficial than completing your notice period.

Step forward with clarity and confidence

Retrenchment can be a setback, but it could also be the push you need to meaningfully plan your next career move. If finances are your primary concern, support is available. If your job loss was involuntary and you earned $5,000 or less a month on average in the last 12 months, you may be eligible for the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme. It offers temporary financial payouts of up to $6,000 over six months to help tide you through this transition.

sound so boomer with all the hearsay from this or that without naming who is the higher up or which level of the higher up. Talking about senior engineer in different functions to fight with each other, fight up club ar?

So obvious you are trying to phish information or just trolling when you talk about package or downgraded work. You clearly forget about nsi/pip

It's either you are stirring or just a broken radio, fossil from your glory days.

I heard from higher up that the senior level engineers will need to compete with other senior engineer to become the overall senior engineer for the integrated functions model. What will happen to the seniors engineer which lose the battle? Will be they downgraded in terms of their title and doing working level stuff or will they be given the package?
