Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

They don't see it as a problem at all.....

The fact that people are leaving, especially the fact that people with skills that are difficult to replace are leaving, is not seen by UP as a problem, so I don't think the employees here will see any raise for a long time. Maybe one day they'll realize they should've given people a raise, but I'm afraid it will be too late then. They will risk bringing this company to the ground just because of their greed.

Just by looking at UP, I know US stands no chance competing with China where people with hard skills are more valuable than leadershits and nerds instead of MBA get real respect.

Managers are intimidated when an employee knows more about the job than they do TOM

Managers with UP aren’t allowed to “manage.” Anyone with a manager title is really a supervisor who takes instruction from the directors. Managers aren’t allowed to make decisions without informing their bosses. Managers at UP are managers in title only.

To the person saying managers want skilled people to make their jobs easier you need to realize how incompetence breeds incompetence. You have a point when a manager themselves is skilled, THEN they might seek out others like themselves. Or train others to be skilled like themselves. But when a manager does not know the craft they’re managing and they are questioned beyond timeroll & budget but about what, why, how things are going to get done they dont want their ignorance nor incompetence exposed. Hence they may want a competent employee to give them the answers but they dont ever want their bosses to know they are just repeating what someone else told them. These types of managers then tend to look at a skilled competent employee beneath them as a threat to their position if someone above them ever realizes the manager is just a communication repeating go between between upper management and employees who can produce positive results. That the manager cant “manage” things to improvement. How many managers out here were just rules na-i’s trying to bust employees on violations? When did those managers facilitate moving freight faster and/or more efficiently from point A to point B?

It’s not the managers that don’t want skilled employees. You need to get you head out of your a-s and realize it’s the executives that set the course for the company including hiring and compensation. Most managers want great employees as this makes their jobs easier. I have never heard anyone in a supervisor role wish for incompetent workers.

Too many managers and wanna be managers dont want skilled competent people. They dont care about things being done right. They only care about they themselves looking good. These types of people dont want to compete against competence, skill, or abilities.

What is it going to take for everyone to realize UP doesn’t value any employee, including managers. You and I are just a number on a spreadsheet and absolutely nothing more. Your experience, dedication, ability, etc does not mean squat. If fact, experience is looked down on by senior management. Post after post ask when is UP going to change, value us, give us a raise, and so forth. Do you really expect these things? If you do, I think you should seek help because you are delusional at best.

This is how corporations work. They are only going to pay you enough to keep you here no more.
