Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Serious Question

If GM claims they have money to the investors with record profit but then go on interviews and say they are out of money, why are all the sister vehicles still built?

To the diehard members of the GM elite:

  1. what's the difference between the silverdo and sierra
  2. what's the difference between the tahoe, yukon, and esclade
  3. Same with its bigger sister the suburban, yukon xl, and escalde esv.

Seems if GM just built one version with options to choose from that's a cost savings. Especially when majority of the differences are appearance only.

Plus what's four main US brands' identities. If Buick out sells Cadillac more often than not why maintain two luxury brands. What's the GMC brand vs Chevy? Who do the brands compete against?

GM needs to compete again.

Agree that there is a lot of cost savings and productivity to get rid of executives. I've always said that they could cut 1/4 of the executives and the place would run better without all the politics and in fighting.

From what I've seen-
EGMs are the ones who have to deliver the project on time at quality with whatever resources they get. The pressure to deliver day to day is on them. A truely stressful job. But if they fail, they get a pass because they are just staffers and not an executive.
Directors are the ones who are "No KIdding" responsible to the corporation to get projects done. When projects go bad, they get fired. (I know not often enough.) No real visibility to the C suite. They do the trade offs among projects that all have less resources than needed in hopes that the EGMs deliver and meet deadlines.
Executive Directors are the ones that really manage the budgets operationally. They are the ones that tell the Directors that they can't have the resources needed to do the project well. They are the ones that never take accountability for a project because the Director had day-to-day responsibilities. They are politicians at best and usually the most capable of escaping responsibility. They only get a meeting or two with any of the the C suite
Vice Presidents are the ones that set the budget top town. They are the ones that say "yes" to the whims of the C suite.
EVPs are Mary's buddies.

another cost saving is to get rid of all the people that have the title excutive director or excutive vice president.

the current chain is

engineer
egm
director
executive director
vice president
executive vice president

and so on

what's the difference in what directors do vs executive directors?

While I agree with your general assessment, I disagree because you are disregarding profitability. I am guessing that you job within GM does not give you visibility to the profitability of the various vehicles. From a profit perspective, GM is a body-on-frame company.

GM (and Ford) will continue to shrivel until they are down to what it is actually very good at which is body-on-frame light trucks. Whether that is one brand or multiple brands remains to be seen. As well as whether the truck-platform-company will be independent or merged into another company. There's been rumors for years that Ford will eventually sell to VW. And that GM will go somewhere. I always smiled at the rumor that SGM buys GM in much the same way that Southwest Bell bought ATT. But point is that trucks are the real value and everything else is just trying to convince wall street to give a better stock price

It's historical, a lot of the badges were originally independent companies that GM bought 100 years ago, and kept going by tradition.

I think it's just marketing.

They think it results in an easy sale when you can sell the same vehicle with a different badge, and the customer doesn't realize it.

They think they're getting something different or better, and it's really no extra effort on your part.

It's an extra sale basically from customer ignorance.

GM is held hostage, in part, by dealership and marketing organizations. Dropped Saturn and Pontiac and Saab last BK. If it weren’t for China’s odd acceptance of the Buick brand, Buick would have been dropped by now. Maintaining GMC as a brand supposedly makes additional profit but I think GM would become strengthened and properly streamlined in product development and quality if they would just drop it and get back to its roots and just maintain Chevy and Cadillac. When you’ve got only 17% of the market, why continue to fool yourself into believing having a bunch of extra brands and trim levels is a good idea? SLT knows what to do, but will they do it? Maybe next BK…

They just claim poverty when asked about lousy raises.

But they have billions.
