Walmart is hiring the old man cart guy.
Sorry you guys are experiencing this level of uncertainty. My husband works for Q so I feel your pain. The ironic thing is we have been trying to fill some of our openings and our recruiter can’t find quality candidates. Everyone is a millennial who thinks they can be a director in 5 years and VP in 7. I guess if we hold tight for a few weeks, we can get some quality candidates in from Q!

You are not alone.
Many folks over 50 struggle, not only in tech.
To 2ygk and others who posted similar sentiments, thanks for the most insensitive, crude and thoughtless remarks. No one wants to smell your hot gas. People ask questions to get practical tips. They don't want free insults from you.
At fifty you should be retired already in this industry. Must be a bottom performer.
Spend the package on retraining in something else. If you've been doing this gig a long time, you're burned out anyways.

Good to see a meaningful post among so many stupid ones...
I am over 55 and was impacted by last layoffs...My department laid off 2 oldest workers and kept the young ones even though I had very good reviews...I was called by technology companies for jobs and did really well during the interviews. But, it was clear to them how old I was...so, most of the time I was in running to be hired but I received many thanks but no thanks email....But, I eventually found a job with another technology company doing exactly what I was doing in Q...One difference was, this new company does not have any politics and I don't feel like I have to watch my back all the time...
So, don't give up....There are jobs are out there you are qualified for and a hiring manager will see that...Good Luck
you are SOL amigo
at lest you can work till 50 here, In India (the ones you call curry people) once you turn 40 swords dangles above you and if you lose you job you will never get another one. due to IT company cartel called NASSCOM.
Focus is n the positives. If you think you won’t find anything, you probably won’t. And don’t limit yourself. You can do more than very specialized job.
I wish I noted the article or site it was posted in, but some federal agency in the U.S. used fake resumes (suggesting different ages/levels of experience) to apply to thousands of jobs in the private sector and the results showed very obvious age discrimination. On the other hand, people are living longer, remaining healthy longer and working longer. Apparently there is a shortage of skilled knowledge workers and this is supposed to favor the older workers.
I'd say, stop worrying about your age. Focus on what you can do well and want to do. The biggest blockers to human success in general is our own self defeating thoughts. We need to get out of our own way and focus on the things that we can work with and the bigger overall picture. Good luck if you're affected. Just note, as much as companies like to pretend they got rid of the fat, they didn't. It's always far more subjective.
you should have saved up by now.
I know some qcom long timers retired at 51. and went on to take a 3 year break. and then came back and took low pressure jobs.. just to kill time in some other companies. hope you have some nest egg.
