Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

I’m really freaking out about next week

I have a young family, a mortgage and my job is our only income stream.. I’m really starting to panic and don’t know what to do. I am not a high grade and was a contractor for some years before I was made staff recently so my payout will be small. I’ve worked unpaid overtime consistently (12 hour days when contacted for just over 7) and have always tried my best but my current line manager just doesn’t like me and the whole process has not been transparent so I have a terrible feeling about next week :(

What’s done is done. Being angry and bitter toward BP won’t help you one bit in finding a new job. You can’t seethe. You have to get busy moving forward. Don’t be selfish. Your family needs you. Your family needs to see you as strong and positive. You’ll get through this just like countless millions of others before you have. Make finding a new job your ruthless full time job beginning today.

As someone who is in his mid 50s and have seen my position downsized and eliminated three times in my career, the best advice I can give anyone is to allow for grieving but be prepared to pick yourself off the floor just as fast as you can. This is the way of corporations in the modern era. You will likely lose your job a few times in a long career. Don’t let depression to take root. Make finding a new job your new full time
Job. Network like you never have before. And don’t confuse blindly responding to lots of job postings on LinkedIn and Indeed for actual progress...biggest mistake people laid off make. Also, don’t be afraid at looking at contract job opportunities because in today’s economy it likely is your best strategy. Many companies eventually hire contractors full time. You will make it through this. Adaptability and relentless focus is what you need. Be smart with money too.

We can’t control it at this point do worry does nothing to change the result next week, our outcomes are already set. What will be will be, and you just have to have faith in yourself that should the worst happen you will figure out a way to move forward ok. Perhaps right now it may feel like it is not clear how that will happen, but it will. Remember BP is a good company to have on our CV/resume.

I hope all goes well for you (and me too) :) take care.

Previous commenter - you are SO right. If I hear about the headspace app, I am going to lose it. bp, how about giving us something that will ACTUALLY help? Such as answers or transparency maybe?

Use the Headspace app. Evidently that is bp answer to all your problems.

I understand what you are going through. I don’t know how religious you are but God has your back and supports you. Know that if God is for you who can be against you. You will be fine.

I'm so sorry. I absolutely know what you're going through. Early in my career, I was in the same boat: young family, mortgage with little equity, etc... Thankfully, I was retained for a number of years after and through many cycles. That doesn't give you any predictions. Everything comes down to what your skillsets are and whether you think you can do the job in the "new bp". I think you should channel your energy towards looking to see what other jobs you can do. Take every advantage of the package should you be let go. Don't do what I did, which was to disregard it (but admittedly, I was in a position to retire, but I've found other opportunities). It may seem bleak now, but don't give up! Your family needs you. They're there to support you, and please (for their sake) remember that. You'll have more time than you think after you leave. I wish you all the best and I hope you update us on your situation.

It’s not alpha order in my org. My convo is sched for early Monday and my name is not at the beginning of the alpha. Best wishes and good luck to you all. You will be ok. It might not seem like it right now. But everything will be ok.

Alphabetical order is what the HR people said. Line manager will have to give the news even if the manager was not selected. That manager will have to 'own' the decision even if they don't agree with it. Go easy on your managers next week. It really wasn't up to them who stays or goes. Such idiocy....

I wish you all the best. I can tell you that the severance package will give you up to 18 months of being on the company's healthcare plan if you choose COBRA. Your monthly rates will be the same as active employees for the first 12 months (meaning you would owe what comes out of your paycheck currently). It's a tremendous perk since it sounds like you have a young family.

Relax and wait for the news.
