I have been in the computer and networking industry for 40 years, and soon after Y2K tech companies started either off-shoring engineering jobs or hired H1B visa holders to replace workers here. I have been part of and have seen entire engineering/development/test teams eliminated, and many fully qualified experienced American workers having their careers destroyed because they were no longer needed in the US. I also have many friends and colleagues who were forced to do “knowledge transfers” to their replacements under threat of not receiving a severance package. None of us felt “entitled”, we were just expecting that we would be valued for our hard work and dedication to help make company XYZ successful.
Layoffs have just become part of what we have to deal with in our industry, and that is why for years I have been suggesting that young people learn real trades like HVAC, plumping, electrical, machining, equipment operators, etc. There are shortages in all of those fields, there is good money to be made, and they will NOT be off-shored or replaced with H1B workers.
Becoming victims of the brutal HPE layoffs that has been going on for over a decade is no doubt terrible. No ifs and buts about it. Anyone affected has the right to be angry with the greedy C-level executives and elected officials who are the prime reason for the scourge. To some extent I would argue that the arrogance and excesses committed by the manufacturing workers of the 70s and 80s is also partly to blame for the exodus of jobs from America.
Spewing hate at other people and calling them names is a whole different thing and that needs to be called out for what it is. It is despicable. Fretting, fuming and spewing hate is not going to get you your next job. Use your brain power and be open minded about the world, and that is the only thing that can help you progress in life land your next job and find happiness in life. The ingenuity and hard working spirit of the people who came to this land over the last 2 centuries is what got America to the top spot in the world. They were able to rise to the top despite the greedy and dishonest politicians and rulers who by the way have existed since the beginning of time. We all should should strive to awaken that spirit of hard work, honesty and ingenuity that is innate in each of us. That is the only recipe to get ourselves out of the rut we are finding ourselves in. We owe it to ourselves and future generations.
"Once again: you sold your jobs to the Third World leeches because you wanted to be able to go and to "kick-a--" anywhere in the world. You did it to yourselves."
Hard to argue with that. And still we let the wealthy goad us into playing the "your team is bad, my team is good ... ie Dem vs Repub" nonsense. It won't change until we start to demand better from our politicians, our media and our corporate leaders. I'm not hopeful. I worked with folks from India many years ago, they were pretty routinely incompetent. lately I worked with folks from India up until I got WFR'd recently, they've come a long way. We've been sitting on our dead butts.
We have met the enemy and he is us .... "Pogo 1971"
Once again: you sold your jobs to the Third World leeches because you wanted to be able to go and to "kick-a--" anywhere in the world. You did it to yourselves. You sunk 4 trillion in Iraq and in Afghanistan while your own roads and bridges are becoming like those of a Third World country. When are you going to stop blaming others for your own self-inflicted wounds? Where were you when industrialized states in America were being pauperized because you were selling those jobs to Mexico, or China?
Yep, these third world leeches need to crawl back into the cesspool from which they came
HB1 visa and third world country ciitzens have the rights and privilegses of the constitution under the Liberal left wing. So even though we are legal US citizens in America our rights and privileges are second class if a third world country citizen is hired. How sad.
I see it too - that terrible sense of entitlement. <<
The world as you know it would look much different if not for the hard work, ingenuity and resourcefulness of American workers. In fact, most of the world would still be under nazi/communist domination if not for American blood and treasure. It's not entitlement Mr. foreign dude...it's called American exceptionalism. Sorry that torques you.
Open and shut case. They are replacing American workers with cheap labor with a loophole. An it has been going on since the bill's inception.
What galls me the most is that Fiorina railed against it during her campaign but benefited from it while at HP. Neat to see Louis Platt try to get away from Stahl in the middle of the overtime segment.

@MmumJjE-2deb You are absolutely correct. I am a 1st gen American and I see it too - that terrible sense of entitlement.
Btw, H1Bs are not used to replace American workers. They are used to fill positions in high demand. I don't know too many Americans with the high tech skills and backgrounds that are required to SW Engineering positions.
Also, why would you want educated people to leave the US? We need more people with PhDs who can contribute positively to society. It makes absolutely no sense to eliminate people who bring brain power and the potential for change.
I too saw the 60 minute piece - but one thing that struck me about it was that replacing a "high cost" US citizen with a H1-B individual shouldn't really make a huge financial difference for the employer if they are located in the same region....cost of living is cost of living. That said, having your job replaced by an off shore resource is a completely different financial scenario, but that wouldn't require a H1-B visa
Support H1B reform!
Sorry sport, any moron could run a company better than grandma meg runs hpe
Please feel free to relocate yourself and your illiterate writing skills to Canada or Mexico.
Why Americans are so ignorant? I heard people asked Asian to go back to their countries. How? We are born in US with parent who came here via H1B with PhD degree. And by the way, simply because some Americans are 3th generations here doesn't mean they are superior. The problem of some of the Americans is sense of entitlement. Check who are the CEOs of Google, Microsoft and Pepsi-coke. They came here through H1B and able to run the companies better than HPE. Sorry to say but big companies can find other alternatives to set up another Silicon Valley hub in Canada or Mexico. And this means our house price will drop and yet no net gain of job here.
Granny Meg and her bonehead leaders are greedy arse pigs. The afterlife will pay her and her cronies back dearly. Her decisions are unamerican especially for the veterans who so defended this country.
Just finished watching it. Great story. Now I understand why granny Meg was so upset with the Donald.

Just shows the greed . Hey, they can't take it with them.
Breaks my heart to have witnessed so many Americans layed off over the last several years to then see a FLOOD of H1B Indian workers brought in to back fill. Folks can ignore it, deny it, lie about it, but it doesn't change the fact that HPE has abused the H1B program. Un-freaking-believable the surge in Indian H1Bs, particularly in the last several months. This needs to be investigated by congress.
I'm not anti-immigrant enough to slam H-1B really super-hard. If I were the head policy wonk in charge, I might say, grant H-1B only if you pay them $150 k/year or more, maybe. Get rid of the idea that we bring them in for lower-skilled jobs... Bring them in ONLY when American corporations are DESPERATE for high-skilled, specialized-skilled workers... And they don't have time to train Americans.
What REALLY gets me is the likes of HPE... Due to their black-listing of laid-off Americans... Will not re-hire them... We laid-off ex-HPE-ers are not ALLOWED to compete against the H-1Bs, not at any price! Even if we are willing to work for less than they will take! How is THAT for so-called "free market" practices!?!?
One VERY simple fix, for starters: Companies that rule out (or largely, mostly rule out) re-hiring of laid-off folks, should get ZERO H-1B allocations!
The American president needs to end H1B visas and tax into oblivion companies that send jobs abroad. That's all. The end.
To the poster below -- Yes. Americans are entitled to American jobs.
Pro tip: The vast majority of the visa & overseas workers are very basic. Can only handle simple tasks & the language barrier is detrimental. I'm not sure where the arrogance of many of these subpar employees comes from. They are not very good. Just very cheap.
Americans sold their jobs to China and India and Costa Rica and Mexico and Japan and Korea ... so that they could dominate the world militarily - to be able to put men in harms way within 12 hours.
Now they are all complaining about their "lost jobs" and yet their President is going to de-fund their diplomatic machinery so as to continue building the military machinery.
@MmumJjE-1sdq; Not to be rude, but I simply cannot believe you were raised in the United States. It is simply not possible that an off-spring of educated parents (pHD), attending school in the US could have such atrocious grammar. #troll#

problem is cheaper always wins.........talk to your higher ups first
H-1B visas need to be completely eliminated. They are being used to replace Americans with cheap foreign labor. Don't believe the lying idiot CEOs who only care about making themselves richer.
Is this on tomorrow?
I detest the H1b visa concept. It needs to end. Off shoring of jobs too. Should be made so financially disadvantaged that no one wants to do it.
