well said 4CXC, however many in this forum write out of blind prejudice and racism. They are very simple minded and thinking that stopping H1B will get their jobs back. Not thinking that this is corporate America which is working against them, they just point at anyone with a foreign origin; specially if that origin differs from theirs. It's regretful what has become of Qualcomm and its employees.

Trump doesn't care about bringing corporate profits back to the US, but he may want to use it as a bargaining chip to get companies to stop offshoring or bringing in H1Bs. And I say that companies won't care about that.

The H1B bad/restriction will just make things worse here because it will give companies a bigger reason to offshore to keep their investors happy. Just like the US, the talent you find in India can be bad, but you can also find as good talent there as here. In addition, there's more people going into engineering, including women. Just go to an offshore dev center. You'll see almost as many women as men.

Do you really think Trump goes to bed at night worried about threats to Qualcomms profit margin, the fate of non-resident H1B visa holders, or increasing Iphone cost ? I think he is more concerned with supporting the people that voted for him. Ultimately we don't know how this will be resolved. Viewing this from an Engineers perspective as a purely logical-rational based policy based on pragmatism is naive and foolish.

Tech companies were unanimously pro-Hillary. Trump is a vindictive character who takes great pleasure in shaming and punishing those who do not fully support and respect him. Do not expect any favors from this administration..

good point 2oou!

Let's check the manufacturers for the American pride, IPhone6:

Accelerometer: Bosch in Germany. Invensense in the United States.

Audio Chipsets and Codec: Cirrus Logic in the United States (outsourced for manufacturing).

Baseband processor: Qualcomm in the United States (outsourced for manufacturing).

Batteries: Samsung in South Korea. Huizhou Desay Battery in China.

Cameras: Sony in Japan. OmniVision in the United States produces the front-facing FaceTime camera chip but subcontracts TMSC (in Taiwan) for manufacturing.

Chipsets and Processors: Samsung in South Korea and TSMC in Taiwan. Alongside their partner GlobalFoundries in the United States.

Controller Chips: PMC Sierra and Broadcom Corp in the United States (outsourced for manufacturing).

Display: Japan Display and Sharp in Japan. LG Display in South Korea.

DRAM: TSMC in Taiwan. SK Hynix in South Korea.

eCompass: Alps Electric in Japan.

Fingerprint sensor authentication: Authentec makes it in China but outsources it to Taiwan for manufacturing.

Flash memory: Toshiba in Japan and Samsung in South Korea.

Gyroscope: STMicroelectronics in France and Italy.

Inductor coils (audio): TDK in Japan.

Main Chassis Assembly: Foxconn and Pegatron in China.

Mixed-signal chips (such as NFC): NXP in Netherlands.

Plastic Constructions (for the iPhone 5c): Hi-P and Green Point in Singapore.

Radio Frequency Modules: Win Semiconductors (module manufacturers Avago and RF Micro Devices) in Taiwan. Avago technologies and TriQuint Semiconductor in the United States. Qualcomm in the United States for LTE connectivity.

Screen and Glass (for the display): Corning (Gorilla Glass) in the United States. GT Advanced Technologies produces the sapphire crystals in the screens.

Semiconductors: Texas Instruments, Fairchild and Maxim Integrated in the United States.

Touch ID sensor: TSMC and Xintec in Taiwan.

Touchscreen Controller: Broadcom in the United States (outsourced for manufacturing).

Transmitter and Amplification Modules: Skyworks and Qorvo in the United States (outsourced for manufacturing).

So adding taxes and tariffs to the foreign products will jump up the price for, for instance, the Iphone and has direct impact on the American consumers. So yes, our president talks the new official language of the white house as Jon Stewart pointed out.

Beside H1B is also given to those who graduate with Master or PhD degrees from the US universities. Unless people in this forum want to "kick" them out too and make the US less competitive in the world so (in their minds) they can keep their jobs, just "deporting" H1B is not good for the US and its economy. Remember if the US is less competitive in the world, you will lose your job one way or the other.

Just you know I have no doubt that H1B is abused by the corporate America, but some of the comments in this forum are just rubbish.

Trump will send the H1Bs back, and companies will export even more jobs overseas since it'll be cheaper. The IP that QC and other make can be easily shared over the Internet. What can Trump do about this? Create a tax/toll booth for IP shared across the Internet? Doesn't he want less regulations?

Trump made it perfectly clear in his press conference that he would place a 20% import tax on cars manufactured in Mexico due to outsourcing of US jobs He said something similar to big pharma today and you can expect tech leaders to get a greeting card from the white house later this month. We don't know the details yet, but it will be big, bold, and deeply hated by valley billionaires. For those of us working in the trenches, this is not bad news.

I don't give a damn about companies profit, all I want is to send all these H1B guys back so we can have a healthy company as before, I am so sick of their "friendly" departments .

What could Trump do to stop jobs from going overseas? He could say, if you don't ship jobs, we won't tax profits earned overseas. However, things are going fine now. Companies just invest those profits on overseas development, which is cheaper. The investors don't car where the profits are, only that the profits are there. I don't think corporations really about bringing back profits--it's just to make them seem patriotic, where in reality they are multinational.

Furthermore, what is the minimum salary for H1Bs is Trump targeting? It could still be less than the engineering salaries.

In short, the H1B ban will probably keep things as they are or make them worse.

Why QC don't hire local engineers? There is lots of talent coming out from schools why we need to bring people from oversees sounds very stupid to me....

With H1B, QC would bring in someone to work with other engineers on a team. If H1B is changed, QC would just move all the jobs on the team to India. There's plenty of people in India to give training to the new hires. What laws can stop this?

For some time now, various people and organizations have been proposing a simple, effective solution to abuse of the H-1B work visa: Dole them out according to offered salary, highest first. When the visa cap is hit, we stop issuing visas. Reportedly it is under serious consideration by the incoming Trump administration. https://normsaysno.wordpress.com/2017/01/13/h-1b-reform-proposal-a-great-start-or-a-cruel-ruse/
