Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Any news on NCG (new college grads)?

I got a return offer to join WD in August. I'd think I should be the 1st to get cut but I haven't heard nothing yet. Any idea?

You might think to have a job first then keep looking for next one. But if you could only have a short period of service time in the first job, it won't look good in your future resume either. To be honest, if you have capability to join another better place, try your best to do that.

If you are planning to join technology development, switch your field asap. If you are planning to join design or product, I am assuming you never had any other options to begin with.

Don't you have better choices? There are many thinks wrong with WD which I would not want to go back.

Low salary
Low stocks if any
Bad outlook
Not the best benefits

Run, run for your life

You should definitely look for another place to start your career. Just look at the past 5 years, we've had layoffs multiple times every year, so you will always live in fear. Plus, there are many years (including this year) where there are no base salary increases or bonuses. Very few people get stock, so your best bet is to look for a stable company in a different industry that treats their employees well. Then you can focus on learning and developing instead of looking over your shoulder waiting for the grim reaper. You deserve better!

In general, they try to give new hires a year to prove themselves. It's not a hard rule, but generally you get a year before you are considered part of the "could be laid off" pool.

I know someone in a past layoff who got laid off at 1 year. So you can't count on a lot of leeway.

Let me keep things short - If you are on F1, DO NOT JOIN!

Stock price is kind of an index for the future of a company. It would go up and down, but you will be able to discover the trend. Understood it's a tough job market at this moment, you could secure the existing offer, but keep hunting for a company have future. AI related field is a good one as an example.

Company will use NCG to replace seasoned ones, so you should be able to join in Aug. But just a personal recommendation is that you are likely deserve a better workplace. So if it is possible, keep hunting for a better career opportunity somewhere else.
