Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

New job

Started a New Job at Google after 14 years at Intel, in the DC group.

I was pretty upset at Jntel, but it's going to be good.

I am really impressed with work enviroment, I see lot more women in tech roles, and management. Also lots of Asians and Indians seems more open and less hung up.

It's nice to see managers react to ideas, more than once I have heard we looked at last year, but let's take another look and see if anything has changed.

The average ige is like low 30s, so at 50 and white I am at the edge. I get in early go to gym, get breakfast. Food is all fresh and very good. I think it will be good for at least 5 years. DC and cloud planning will be transferable.

It's so much more open and breathable. Seems more like a college campus than work....so far good

Re OP, I believe OP was reaching out to give hope and advice to others. He/she specifically said it was hard and a learning process. Too bad a few people turned this into a race, divisive issue.

I get the senser OP is no nonsense, very comptent, realist. Others who wish to distort the simplicity of his advise and approach are not friends of anyone.

@1eiw please learn to write properly before posting, no wonder you are still at Intel and the reason Intel is in bad shape.

Here come 🙈😐 an INFERIOR @1xho in attempt to pull down someone who is obviously better than them..this person's post indicates their 😐😔😪 insecurity and being a pitied #loser !!!

  1. Working for people in another country is same as working for someone in another state. We're in a global world and global economy. Many Intel have their FLM or SLM abroad, so ? You can have a foreigner lead in USA also, point being ?

Google is American company with American work culture, matters not where in the world it is. Unlike Intel, if you worked in a better company than Intel, you would know that teams do not thrive on segregating team members, being racist, being hostile and back stabbing each other.

.

  1. Lead isn't always boss.

OP could be smarter or senior than his Lead, if he is main architect. Many leads are at the level of a admin coordinating only efforts.

.

  1. Tier 1 school got attention of Google. School or a high GPA has that effect. In person, OP impressed Google, they converted his contract to permanent job says it all, they see a long term future in him. @1xho must be another HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA hire in year 2000.

.

  1. Quality of coworkers matters more than their nationality. Google does not hire anyone whose personality would not fit into their friendly and open culture. Making a company a success is by hiring THE BEST !!! Google is successful due to it's Asians workers and Indian Execs. Murthy 😍😘will one day take Intel to same heights !

Now @1xho and others like this idiot ... shoo away, take your jealousy elsewhere if you can not appreciate goodness or inspirations from others. 🐶 Come bark here when you can get your first job outside Intel in a better and known company. #Lamers with no future.

OP has defied all odds (age, job not being exact fit etc) by getting this opportunity, proves good things come to good people. Very inspiring to see that OP was able to make success after how badly Intel treated him. Intel's loss💔💔💔 ... unfortunately, ultimately only retards will be the remaining at Intel.

If your lead is in India, does he/she still get paid more than you? How do you feel like working for people in other countries? Do you feel superior or like you know more for having attended tear 1 school?

Congrats.

Wish you lots of success, OP😘😍 You seem really nice. Thanks for answering my Q about the interview. Wonderful to hear they did not make you guess number of marbles in a glass jar 😁😄😂 as I have heard of interviews at Google.

I am glad you got an opportunity away from messed up Intel and at a world's top class corp such as Google. Enjoy !!!

@xgf from op I was not going to respond to the Cury remark. I have thick skin, so this is more for people still looking. I interviewed with 3 established car companies in Bay Area they all have teams working on self drivingcars in Japan, Germany, India or China there are probably another half dozen I did not screen. Lots of jobs today will have these configurations. If you are too proud to work, and prefer Welfare that's your choice.

But allow others to work, so we can pay for your proud acts.

I assume you were one of the people that hated Truman for integrating the US Army, in command, housing etc....,that's your choice/problem don't make it mine. Cheers

@ygp, interview were pretty normal two phone screens one HR, one semi Tech, went to Tier 1 school so after 10 minutes they figured what I don't know, I would figure out by next day. My Physics Prof (Nobel winner) said all we teach is where to look and who to ask. LoL. The In person interviews were more how to approach problems, how to manage project slips, intergration, testing methods. Normal stuff, give very few Pat answers, mostly it depends on x, y and z strong on fast iterations, collecting data. Typical Eng 101. They asked some os, hw, caching stuff pretty standardard. A few times, I said I don't know (which was true and they knew I did not know), but here is how I would learn, start the process. Typical optimazation issues, nothing magical

Still think I was lucky since not a exact fit.

Good luck to all, it's scary and hard. But getting in front of people is first step. Also re do your resume for each job, first f2f I redid my resume as I understood what they valued. Follow up same day/next day offering to answer any questions/follow up and propose two time slots. Nearly everyone responded, usually just thanking me for touching base.

I got to the point where I had questions and tactics some worked well others not so. At Google the Director level guy I asked how long is he been trying to fill the need he looked up at ceiling and said 3 or 4 months. I replied what I don't know I could learn in 6 weeks I said any comptent Engineeer. He smiled said yes compotent. I think that put me in contention

Good luck to all, be flexiable. Think of the pain on the other side of table not fun hiring.

I felt he same when I joined Intel last year, coming to realization within the first week after NEO that .. Intel is the worst company to work for.

Counting down days till I exit.

I have already decided the date I can and will resign.

Op here job in Mntn View, so no relocation :). They first wanted me as a contractor, I said my preference was to be full time employee. The next day they sent a offer letter. Still on pins and a bit spooked about stabality. But I have little control on that. Getting really good exposure to TCO, and how to continue getting cost down over two to three cycles.

Ps our team is leveraged 3 to 1 India/USA, and when I see deployment/ops costs, I see no other options. My lead is actually in India, But is very normal.

Well learn as much as I can, keep a paycheck....it will take a year to undo Intel....never trust a employer again

Funny, that is exactly how I felt about joint Intel 12 years ago. I was very proud to brag to people about working for Intel. Now ISPed and cannot find a job. I know that folks only brag when they are able to find work after Intel, but I represent more of the reality in OR.
